Employment Type: Contract / Temp

Location: London

Reporting To: Craig Starr

Description

We are seeking an experienced and commercially minded Shopper Performance Strategy Director to lead the strategic agenda for a global Shopper Performance function within a leading shopper marketing agency.

This is a high-profile leadership role with responsibility for shaping and evolving shopper performance strategies across APAC, Europe and North America, while serving as the senior strategic lead for a key global FMCG client. Working closely with client stakeholders, account leadership, creative and design teams, and regional shopper specialists, you will translate shopper, category, channel and retail insights into actionable strategies that drive measurable business growth.

The successful candidate will play a critical role in connecting global ambitions with local market learning, ensuring shopper programmes deliver stronger effectiveness, greater consistency, and scalable best practices across multiple regions. This role offers significant exposure to senior stakeholders and the opportunity to influence shopper strategy at a global level.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and evolution of global Shopper Performance strategies, translating shopper, category, channel and commercial insights into actionable programmes that drive measurable business growth.
  • Act as a trusted strategic partner to senior client stakeholders, shaping strategic priorities across brands, categories and markets while leading workshops, business reviews and planning sessions.
  • Analyse shopper journeys, behaviours, motivations and decision drivers to develop effective path-to-purchase strategies across retail, e-commerce and omnichannel environments.
  • Apply shopper frameworks and performance methodologies to identify growth opportunities, optimise investment decisions and improve shopper effectiveness.
  • Partner with Data and Insight teams to evaluate performance, define success metrics, develop effectiveness frameworks and create optimisation roadmaps.
  • Translate strategic thinking into clear creative, design and activation briefs, ensuring execution aligns with shopper objectives and desired behavioural outcomes.
  • Collaborate closely with Creative, Design, Production, Procurement and Account Management teams to deliver integrated and commercially effective solutions.
  • Identify opportunities for asset harmonisation, scalability, innovation and continuous improvement across global markets and programmes.
  • Lead innovation initiatives by applying emerging shopper, retail and commerce trends to client challenges and future growth opportunities.
  • Support business growth through strategic input into new business opportunities, account expansion, thought leadership and proposition development.
  • Coach and mentor strategists and cross-functional teams, fostering a culture of strategic excellence, curiosity, commercial awareness and evidence-based decision making.
  • Act as an ambassador for Shopper Performance, building capability, sharing best practice and strengthening the organisation's strategic reputation globally.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • Significant senior-level strategy experience within shopper marketing, retail marketing, commerce, category management, brand activation or integrated agency environments.
  • Proven experience working with global FMCG brands and complex multi-market programmes.
  • Deep understanding of shopper behaviour, retail environments, path-to-purchase principles and omnichannel marketing.
  • Strong ability to translate shopper, category and commercial insights into clear strategic recommendations and actionable programmes.
  • Experience leading senior stakeholder engagement, workshops, business reviews and strategic planning sessions.
  • Excellent presentation, storytelling and facilitation skills with the ability to influence executive audiences.
  • Strong commercial acumen, with experience balancing strategic ambition against budget, resource and delivery constraints.
  • Confidence working with data, research, performance metrics and effectiveness frameworks to measure impact and identify opportunities.
  • Collaborative leadership style, with experience partnering across Strategy, Creative, Design, Account Management, Data and Production functions.
  • Highly organised and comfortable managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced international environment.
  • Experience developing, coaching and mentoring teams.
  • Willingness to travel internationally and work flexibly across APAC, European and North American time zones.
