We are seeking a highly motivated senior level coder who is looking to step away from production coding, and shift focus towards leading peer review efforts within a Surgical Coding team. 

 

This job can be performed 100% remotely and out of state candidates will be considered.

 

The individual in this position will support and lead quality peer review for assigned Coding Services staff through regular audit of both abstraction and edits. The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge regarding current rules and usage of ICD 10 and CPT and will apply this expertise when auditing assigned specialties. Additionally, this senior level role will assist in trending, coding analysis, coder feedback and providing education both individually and via group presentations.

                

The individual in this position will:

  • Serve as a coding expert for surgical specialties.
  • Maintain records of all quality peer reviews in database for reference and trending.
  • Work closely with Audit, Compliance & Education (ACE) team on audit results.
  • Review work of new and existing coders in conjunction with the Coding Services (CS) Department standards.
  • Work with department leadership and Coding Education specialist to prepare presentations aimed at educating the assigned group of coders team based on audit results and trends.
  • Assist in researching coder questions and provide effective and accurate guidance, accompanied by supporting documentation for audits.
  • Identify and research correct coding for new CPT codes and present this information to the team.
  • Recognize education opportunities for providers when trends in audits are identified that impact compliance or are the result of provider behavior.
  • Perform edit analysis to identify educational opportunities and edit modification.
  • Participate in optimizing work flows to support process improvement and identify additional/ongoing training needs
  • Collaborate with other CUMedicine departments to improve overall revenue cycle health.
  • Assist with development and maintenance of desk procedures. 
  • Make recommendations and research outside coding courses to support staff professional development.
  • Perform other duties and support special projects as assigned.

Requires 3+ years of surgical coding experience with demonstrated expertise in procedural and diagnosis coding.  Knowledge/understanding of teaching physician guidelines is strongly preferred.  CPC or equivalent AHIMA coding certification required; CPMA or other specialty certification is helpfulExcellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential to success.  Must demonstrate strong computer and Microsoft Office software skills. EMR (Epic) and Practice Management software experience is also a required competency.  The ideal candidate will be proficient in reporting and analytics.
