AI Summary

Lead the architectural evolution of the C2MS platform while driving an AI-first engineering culture through hands-on coding and agentic workflows. Collaborate with leadership and commercial stakeholders to align technology strategy with business goals and contribute to RFP responses.
Buckhill is a global technology company with offices in the UK and Croatia. As a strategic technology partner to the London Market, we deliver modern insurance solutions through agile, cross-functional delivery teams leveraging AI capabilities, a growing partner ecosystem, and a culture rooted in innovation and collaboration. We support continuous learning and invest in the growth of our Bucks, fostering an environment where people thrive. With the option for remote work, we've expanded our global footprint, building a diverse and multicultural team making a real impact.

As a Senior Software Architect at Buckhill, you will be a hands-on technical leader who shapes the architecture of our C2MS platform and drives an AI-first engineering culture across a lean, high-performing team. You will write and review agentic developed code, conduct reviews, and own real technical decisions. For us, architecture here means delivery, with governance managed through agentic guardrails, team-level standards, and defined rules and procedures that ensure agents operate safely and consistently.

You will contribute towards evolving our platform architecture, champion agentic AI development practices, and work closely with the Lead Product Owner, your senior developer and architect colleagues, and leadership team, making architectural decisions by quorum through evidence and data-driven analysis to keep our technology strategy aligned with business goals. You will also contribute to commercial conversations, including RFP responses, vendor evaluations, and prospect discussions, as a credible technical voice.

  • 10+ years in software development and architecture, with a track record of delivering and evolving production platforms at scale.
  • Demonstrably hands-on: you write code with a focus on agentic development, engage in code review, and make technical decisions.
  • Strong breadth across modern web platform stacks, with experience working across languages such as PHP, Python, or TypeScript, and comfort with relational databases and message bus patterns regardless of specific framework experience.
  • Experience with payment processing and ecommerce platforms
  • Practical experience with AI/LLM integration, such as building real features or workflows using tools such as Anthropic, OpenAI, Azure AI and OSS AI models.
  • Experience designing and evolving platform architecture, including working with and progressively improving monolithic codebases.
  • Cloud deployment experience on AWS and/or Azure, with solid understanding of scalable, secure, cloud-native infrastructure patterns.
  • Strong API design skills and experience with integration architecture, including third-party partner and ecosystem connectivity.
  • Ability to work effectively in a small, fast-moving team in addition to being pragmatic, delivery-focused, and comfortable with ambiguity.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage confidently with developers, product leadership, and commercial stakeholders.
Desirable
  • Experience with agentic AI frameworks and development tooling, such as designing workflows where AI agents contribute to coding, testing, or continuous improvement.
  • Background in insurance, financial services, or another regulated industry
  • Experience with embedded analytics platforms (e.g., Metabase or similar).
  • Familiarity with SaaS or PaaS product development.
  • Relevant certifications such as AWS/Azure Solutions Architect or TOGAF are valued but not a differentiator as practical delivery matters more.
  • Active participation in the InsurTech or broader technology community, such as speaking, writing, or working groups are a plus.
Hands-On Architecture & Technical Leadership
  • Contribute toward the architectural design and evolution of the C2MS platform, guiding its progression ensuring technical debt resolution velocity is maintained in a sustainable manner, and that the monorepo strategy we’ve employed is continuously tested and improved.
  • Write code, conduct code reviews, and make direct technical decisions alongside the engineering team as this is a deeply hands-on role.
  • Identify and resolve architectural risks, technical debt, and scalability bottlenecks, and own the mitigation strategies.
  • Evaluate and discuss introducing, based on evidence and data-driven analysis, new technologies and approaches that deliver practical, long-term value to the platform and the team.
  • Champion the development of in-house AI capabilities based on enhanced OSS LLMs running on Buckhill owned, specialised AI infrastructure, that contributes toward our goal of a self-managed production-line process for software engineering, with quality and security at its core
  • Ensure platform architecture supports cloud-native deployment on AWS and Azure, with a focus on reliability, security, and scalability.
  • Design and oversee integration architecture with third-party partners covering screening, document processing, connectivity, analytics, and embedded reporting (including Metabase).
  • Ensure data architecture and platform design comply with GDPR and the regulatory requirements relevant to insurance and financial services.
AI-First Development & Agentic Workflows
  • Contribute toward an AI-first development strategy for Buckhill by contributing toward the continuous improvement of systems and workflows where AI agents actively contribute to delivery. In practice this means things like AI-assisted PR reviews, automated test generation, and internal dev copilots accelerating the engineering team's output, alongside production LLM pipelines for document ingestion and extraction already embedded in the platform.
  • Improve agentic development patterns that accelerate the engineering team’s output and raise the quality ceiling of the platform.
  • Improve LLM capabilities (e.g., Anthropic, OpenAI Enterprise, In-house AI, Azure AI) into both the development lifecycle and as product capabilities within C2MS, with a focus on developing our in-house AI capabilities (fine-tuning OSS models and contributing toward in-house AI development).
  • Embed AI-assisted features into core insurance workflows, such as document understanding, decision support, and workflow automation, using practical, production-grade approaches.
  • Champion responsible AI in an insurance context: ensuring AI-assisted decisions are auditable and explainable, and that regulatory and client trust requirements are met.
  • Stay current with the fast-moving agentic AI landscape, continuously evaluating new tooling and patterns for applicability to our platform and delivery model.
Engineering Standards & Team Development
  • Set and maintain engineering standards across the team, including API design, CI/CD practices, containerisation, testing, and code quality, by example as much as by guidance.
  • Mentor developers across the team, raising the overall engineering standard and fostering a culture of continuous improvement in a lean organisation.
  • Collaborate with DevOps to ensure infrastructure supports secure, scalable, and automated deployments.
  • Communicate architectural thinking clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including product and commercial leadership.
Commercial & Stakeholder Involvement
  • Contribute to RFP responses, vendor evaluations, and pre-sales conversations as a credible technical authority.
  • Act as a bridge between technical teams and commercial or client-facing stakeholders, translating complex architectural concepts into clear business terms.
  • Support the Lead Product Owner in aligning the technology roadmap with client needs and business strategy.
  • Remote work
  • Sponsored professional learning
  • Fully covered sick leave
  • Child and family support
  • A friendly and supportive team
  • Career switch opportunities
  • A healthy work-life balance
  • Permanent full-time contract
  • Working schedule flexibility
  • Multi-role options
  • Leadership opportunities
