The News Literacy Project

Senior Manager of Education Design

Full time • Virtual (U.S.) • Reports to the Senior Director of Education Design

Who we are

The News Literacy Project, founded in 2008, is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization building a national movement to ensure that all students are guaranteed to be skilled in news literacy before high school graduation, giving them the knowledge and ability to participate in civic society as well-informed, critical thinkers. NLP is the country’s leading provider of news literacy education and works with districts and educators in all 50 states, primarily through our signature e-learning platform, Checkology®, and weekly educator newsletter, The Sift®. Where you fit in

The News Literacy Project advances the development and teaching of news literacy in K-12 education. We are at an exciting inflection point for our work, and we are making critical investments to rapidly scale our growth and impact. To that end, we are seeking a Senior Manager of Education Design who can manage and help grow our resource collection. This is a great opportunity for you to add your voice, talents and creativity to a team that builds world-class learning experiences, provides influential teacher training and helps shape the global field of news, media and information literacy. We’re looking for someone who can have an immediate and meaningful impact on our work.

This position reports to the Senior Director of Education Design.

About the position

As the Senior Manager of Education Design, you will serve as NLP's go-to expert on our resource library, guiding staff and contributors who develop or adapt resources. You will constantly evaluate NLP’s offerings to ensure relevance, engagement and innovation in order to fulfill educators’ needs and NLP’s strategic plan. You will help identify gaps and design additional resources using educator feedback. You will also coordinate cross-team efforts related to resources, such as marketing campaigns and technology initiatives.

Specifically, in this job, you will:

  • Maintain a multiyear resource development roadmap, informed by educator feedback, that feeds into team and organizational planning. This includes monitoring resource inventories, identifying outdated materials and updating resources as necessary.
  • Drive project management and resource development efforts, coordinating across teams to meet goals and deadlines.
  • Lead the development of a significant portion of new resources, including lessons, instructional videos, online interactives, quizzes, infographics and more.
  • Collaborate with NLP educator support staff to ensure new resource development priorities are aligned with teacher feedback and NLP’s strategic needs.
  • Align resources to educational standards.

This full-time position is virtual. Highly qualified candidates who live in, and are authorized to work in, the United States are encouraged to apply. Any offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check and professional reference check, conducted in accordance with applicable laws.

About you

This position will directly impact many thousands of educators and hundreds of thousands of students in schools across the country and plays a pivotal role in shaping and achieving our organizational strategy. As the Senior Manager of Education Design, you will partner with the Senior Director of Education Design and Senior Vice President of Research and Design to develop innovative news literacy resources educators want and need. While we do not expect candidates to meet all qualifications, the successful candidate will have all or most of the following:

Your experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. Additional degrees — especially in relevant fields such as education, journalism or communications — are a plus.
  • A minimum of 6 years of experience in K-12 education — elementary-level experience is a plus.
  • A background in journalism, news literacy or a similar field (such as information literacy).
  • Substantial instructional design experience and the capability to create innovative, engaging learning activities and instructional resources for students.
  • Project management experience, formal or informal.
  • Experience coordinating with marketing, technology or other cross-functional partners.

Technical expertise

  • Familiarity with major e-learning authoring tools and platforms. This includes accessibility standards and protocols, specifically the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
  • At least basic proficiency in graphic design, including the ability to work with image files.
  • Basic video editing skills.
  • Skilled in Notion, Slack, Canva and Microsoft Office, including SharePoint.

Working competencies

  • A genuine passion for NLP’s mission and a desire to grow our impact.
  • A high-level understanding of various learning standards, approaches and frameworks.
  • Strong understanding of the practices and standards of journalism, social media and student information habits.
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy and follow-through.
  • Ability to integrate relevant educational research and theory into practice.
  • A talent for making complex topics come alive for students with innovative learning experiences.
  • Experience producing high-quality written work on tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and timelines.
  • Experience and comfort with working in a virtual work environment (in terms of both technology tools and personal skills).
  • Flexibility to shift projects when priorities change.

Compensation and benefits

The starting salary for this position is $77,500 to $82,500, but negotiable depending on the candidate’s qualifications, experience and our organizational budget. NLP also offers outstanding perks and benefits, including health, vision and dental insurance, a 401(k) plan match, unlimited PTO, flexible work environment and more.
