Every day we approach our work with a sense of purpose, and we look for others who share that passion and desire for a career with impact.   WHO YOU ARE As the Senior Manager of Development at AGU, you will play a strategic and versatile role in helping promote discovery in Earth and Space science for the benefit of humanity. You are responsible for growing and strengthening the organization's individual giving program and working with the Vice President to support AGU’s activities with foundations and corporate partners. In addition to managing a portfolio of mid-level and major donors, this role oversees the Senior Coordinator of Development, helping to build fundraising systems, cultivate donor relationships, and develop a high-performing team. As a strategic partner to the Vice President of Development, you will contribute to departmental planning, cross-functional collaboration, and the long-term growth of AGU’s philanthropic program. You are a frontline fundraiser, successfully managing a portfolio while building the systems, strategies, and donor experiences that deepen engagement and increase philanthropic investment. You enjoy working closely with leadership and colleagues in Development, Meetings, Membership, Strategic Communications & Marketing, Finance, and other AGU departments to ensure coordination and alignment across all fundraising efforts. You must be effective in building internal and external relationships to ensure that current and prospective donors are well connected to AGU.   WHAT YOU WILL DO Achieve fundraising goals through mid-level and major donor gifts Develop and implement tailored strategies to cultivate, solicit, steward, and close on individual gifts to achieve or exceed annual fundraising goals. Help build and coordinate the infrastructure for a healthy and growing individual giving program that is tailored to donor needs. Develop and implement individualized strategies for prospect identification and qualification, building a pipeline and improving retention. Partner with the VP of Development on major gift opportunities and strategy. Represent AGU in donor- and partner-facing settings and contribute to internal/external collaborative special projects as needed. Build an individual giving strategy and program Develop strategies to expand the major giving pipeline. Create pathways for annual donors to become major donors. Design donor recognition and stewardship programs that ensure that donors continue to find value in AGU’s mission. Work with the VP to develop giving societies and donor engagement opportunities. Serve as strategic partner and leader within Development and across AGU Provide day-to-day leadership and mentorship to the Senior Coordinator while helping build a high-performing, collaborative development team. Foster the Senior Coordinator's professional growth through regular feedback, mentoring, stretch assignments, and development opportunities. Promote collaboration across the Development team and throughout AGU, ensuring effective communication and coordination among individual giving, foundation relations, corporate partnerships, and operations. Serve as a trusted thought partner to the Vice President, contributing to departmental planning, problem-solving, and organizational growth. Contribute to a data-driven fundraising culture Conduct prospect research and pipeline management that moves funding forward. Gather, develop, analyze, and track donor data using Salesforce. Partner with colleagues to maintain accurate records, track metrics, and generate insights. Stay informed of fundraising and philanthropy trends. Foster a collaborative and innovative culture Demonstrate a positive, can-do attitude while fostering an inclusive, collaborative team environment. Build internal knowledge around AGU’s individual donors and their interests to identify and create opportunities for donors to engage with AGU. Embrace creativity, innovation, and continuous learning by experimenting with new ideas, adapting to change, and working across teams. Identify and implement best practices in your work and across the department. Perform other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification.   WHAT YOU WILL BRING Bachelor’s degree with at least 8 years of progressive fundraising experience, with direct responsibility for managing midlevel and major gifts from individuals; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated success in nonprofit fundraising, with a proven ability to develop and execute donor strategies that drive cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship, and consistently closing major gifts and meeting fundraising goals. Skills in researching and understanding prospective donors, combined with critical thinking skills, to deliver highly relevant opportunities for donor support and engagement. Passion for people: you must enjoy working with people, hearing their stories, and helping them connect and grow. Professional communication skills, including excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills with an eye for detail. Demonstrated success working across departments and engaging colleagues at all levels. Experience managing complex projects and meeting multiple deadlines with flexibility and initiative. Sound judgment and discretion when working with sensitive donor or organizational information. Experience in a scientific, knowledge-based or technical setting is a plus, but not required. Familiarity with the philanthropic landscape supporting science, climate issues, and related topics. Flexibility to travel occasionally for donor engagement and events. Working knowledge of Salesforce and prospect research tools. Sound computer skills, including word processing and database management.
