Role Description
Reporting to the Global Tax Director, the Senior Manager, Canadian Tax is a senior member of the Tax leadership team responsible for leading Canadian income tax compliance, tax accounting, tax planning, tax audits, and tax risk management, while supporting global tax reporting and strategic tax initiatives across the Kal Tire group.
The Senior Manager, Canadian Tax serves as a technical resource for Canadian corporate tax matters and works closely with Finance, Legal, business leaders, and external advisors to ensure compliance with evolving tax legislation, manage tax risk, and support business objectives.
As a key member of the Tax leadership team, this position plays an important role in developing organizational tax capability through technical leadership, process improvement, knowledge sharing, advisor management, and the development of team members.
Core Responsibilities
Canadian Tax Planning and Advisory
- Lead analysis of Canadian corporate reorganizations, acquisitions, divestitures, and financing transactions.
- Assess tax implications of business initiatives and strategic decisions.
- Identify opportunities to improve tax efficiency while appropriately managing tax risk.
- Prepare and review technical memoranda, planning documentation, presentations, and recommendations.
- Support domestic tax planning initiatives and special projects.
Corporate Tax Compliance
- Oversee the preparation and review of Canadian corporate income tax returns and related filings.
- Manage corporate tax instalments, elections, information returns, and supporting compliance requirements.
- Review complex tax positions and ensure appropriate technical support and documentation is maintained.
- Monitor changes in tax legislation and assess potential impacts to the business.
- Ensure timely and accurate compliance with federal and provincial corporate income tax obligations.
- Review foreign reporting obligations including T106, T1134, T1135, NR4, T5, and other information returns as required.
- Review annual surplus calculations, adjusted cost base calculations, and supporting documentation for foreign affiliates.
Tax Accounting and Financial Reporting
- Lead quarterly and annual tax provision processes in accordance with IFRS.
- Review current and deferred tax calculations, effective tax rate analyses, tax disclosures, and supporting working papers.
- Review tax account reconciliations and ensure tax balances are accurately reflected in the financial statements.
- Partner with Finance and external auditors regarding tax accounting and reporting matters.
- Support Pillar Two reporting and compliance requirements, including annual calculations, filings, and financial statement disclosures. Review the accuracy and completeness of supporting documentation for tax accounting entries and related tax balances.
Transfer Pricing
- Support the Global Tax Director in the execution of transfer pricing initiatives.
- Coordinate with external advisors in the preparation and maintenance of Canadian transfer pricing documentation.
- Liaise with Finance, business stakeholders, and external advisors to gather information required for transfer pricing analyses, reporting, and documentation.
Global Tax Reporting
- Support the Global Tax Director in the execution of global tax reporting initiatives.
- Support preparation of annual Effective Tax Rate and Pillar Two calculations.
- Oversee withholding tax compliance requirements and assist in identifying withholding tax planning opportunities.
Audit, Disputes and Tax Authority Management
- Lead corporate tax interactions with CRA, Revenu Québec, and provincial tax authorities.
- Manage responses to corporate tax audits, reviews, information requests, and assessments.
- Develop audit strategies and coordinate supporting documentation and technical analysis.
- Manage objections, appeals, and dispute resolution matters where required.
- Foster productive working relationships with tax authorities and external advisors.
Indirect Tax
- Provides oversight of indirect tax compliance, including GST/HST, QST, PST, and provincial tire levies.
- Reviews and approves indirect tax returns, reconciliations, and significant tax adjustments prepared by the Canadian Indirect Tax Manager and team.
- Provides guidance on complex indirect tax matters and supports tax authority audits and inquiries.
- Monitors indirect tax risks, legislative changes, and process improvement opportunities.
External Advisor Management
- Manage relationships with external tax advisors and specialists.
- Review technical advice, tax opinions, compliance deliverables, and planning recommendations.
- Coordinate outsourced tax projects and specialized advisory engagements.
- Ensure external advice is practical, cost-effective, and aligned with business objectives.
- Assist in managing advisor budgets and engagement scope
Team Leadership and Development
- Provide technical leadership, coaching, and mentorship to other members of the Tax team.
- Review compliance and consulting work prepared by junior team members and provide guidance on technical matters.
- Support recruitment, onboarding, and development of tax talent.
- Contribute to a collaborative, service-oriented, and high-performing team culture
Tax Risk, Process Improvement and Technology
- Identify, assess, and manage corporate tax risks.
- Strengthen tax governance, controls, documentation standards, and compliance processes.
- Partner with Finance, IT, and business leaders on ERP, reporting, and transformation initiatives.
- Identify opportunities to automate and streamline tax processes and reporting activities.
- Support the adoption of technology, analytics, workflow tools, and AI solutions that improve efficiency and compliance effectiveness.
Administration
- Establish new Canadian tax accounts, including online access, CRA authorizations, and direct deposit registrations, as needed.
- Organize and participate in monthly Family Office and Legal team meetings.
- Participate in quarterly VO department meetings.
- Maintain tax calendars, filing trackers, and compliance documentation to support timely reporting and filing obligations.
- Coordinate with internal stakeholders and external advisors on administrative tax matters and information requests.
Education
- CPA designation.
- Completion of the CPA In-Depth Tax Program.
Experience
- 10+ years of progressive Canadian corporate tax experience.
- Combination of public practice and industry experience preferred.
- Experience leading or mentoring tax professionals.
- Significant experience in:
- Canadian corporate tax compliance

- Advanced knowledge of Canadian income tax legislation and tax reporting requirements.
