Own day-to-day accounting, general ledger, close, and portfolio-level financial reporting for residential, commercial and industrial, and distributed energy solar and storage assets. Lead tax equity and HLBV accounting, securitization and lease accounting, technical documentation and audits, cross-functional coordination, and management of accounting staff.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF SUNSTRONG MANAGEMENT SunStrong Management is a leading independent asset management and servicing platform specializing in residential and commercial solar energy portfolios. SunStrong provides end-to-end services including operations and maintenance, customer billing and support, asset performance management, and investor reporting. The company partners with leading capital providers to optimize clean energy assets at scale, supporting the growth of distributed renewable energy while delivering reliable performance and exceptional customer experience
THE SR MANAGER, ACCOUNTING POSITION This position owns day-to-day accounting for a residential (RESY), commercial & industrial (C&I), and distributed energy solar and storage portfolio. This is a hands-on, portfolio-level accounting role: you will own the transactions, reconciliations, and coordinate technical positions for this book directly and serve as the final internal authority on them, including financial reporting. A separate function owns consolidated/SEC-level reporting; this role feeds it.
SR MANAGER, ACCOUNTING RESPONSIBILITIES
Owns day-to-day portfolio accounting and the general ledger, including transaction recording, account reconciliations, and journal entry review with full sign-off authority, and manages month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close on the group close calendar
Prepares and/or reviews portfolio-level financial statements and reporting, ensuring accuracy and compliance ahead of consolidated/SEC-level reporting
Applies and maintains tax equity and partnership accounting, including partnership-flip, inverted-lease, and pass-through structures, ITC allocation and basis adjustments, and related fund waterfalls and cash-sweep mechanics
Owns the HLBV (hypothetical liquidation at book value) methodology end to end, building, maintaining, and reviewing quarterly models and determining the allocation of income or loss to the tax equity investor and the sponsor, including non-controlling interest
Analyzes LLC agreements, partnership agreements, and related tax equity documents, and translates their economic terms into HLBV model logic and accounting conclusions
Evaluates and accounts for tax equity transactions from inception through unwind, including consolidation/VIE assessments, buyouts, and amendments, and maintains model controls and audit-ready documentation
Accounts for asset-backed securitization (ASC 860) debt, including sale-vs.-secured-borrowing analysis and covenant calculations, and applies lease and revenue accounting (ASC 842, ASC 606) to residential, C&I, and distributed energy arrangements
Establishes and documents US GAAP accounting processes for new or evolving deal structures, and develops audit-ready technical memos, partnering with the Technical Accounting group to clear conclusions ahead of external audit
Serves as primary liaison with external auditors, the asset management team, and service providers, coordinates across Treasury, Accounts Payable, Asset Management, Legal, and Tax, and presents financial analyses to senior management
Hires, manages, mentors, and evaluates accounting staff supporting the portfolio
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree in accounting
CPA credential required (active and in good standing)
8+ years in financial accounting or auditing (Big 4 preferred), including at least 3+ years operating at the manager level or above
Direct financial reporting experience, including preparation and/or review of financial statements
General ledger ownership and hands-on month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close experience
Deep working knowledge of renewable energy tax equity accounting and HLBV (hypothetical liquidation at book value) — partnership flips, ITC allocation, HLBV-driven non-controlling interest, fund-level waterfalls. This is central to the role and is not substitutable with general SEC reporting or corporate accounting experience alone.
Demonstrated experience reading and analyzing LLC agreements and tax equity partnership documents (allocation and distribution waterfalls, preferred returns, flip and buyout provisions, capital account mechanics) and translating their terms into accounting positions
Hands-on experience building, maintaining, and reviewing HLBV models, including tiered liquidation waterfalls, ITC basis reduction, tax-to-book differences, and period-over-period changes in members’ claims on book net assets, with the ability to explain results and variances to auditors and senior leadership
Working knowledge of tax equity structures common to renewable energy (partnership flip, inverted lease, sale-leaseback, and transferability of tax credits) and the related ASC guidance, including ASC 810 (consolidation/VIE), ASC 323 (equity method), ASC 740 (income taxes), and noncontrolling interest classification
Experience with asset-backed securitization accounting (ASC 860) sale-vs.-secured-borrowing analysis, ABS debt, covenant calculations. General corporate credit-facility experience is not an equivalent.
Demonstrated portfolio- or entity-level accounting experience with full ownership and sign-off authority — i.e., owning transactions and positions directly, not solely reviewing or consolidating others' work
Proven people-management experience, including hiring, performance management, and developing accounting staff
Strong judgment and the ability to operate independently with minimal oversight across multiple deal structures
Consistently high ethical standards, reflected in both words and actions
Ability to independently define and set accounting processes and policy for new portfolios or deal types
Strong research skills in accounting literature (ASC standards), with the ability to produce audit-ready technical memos and form well-supported preliminary conclusions in partnership with the Technical Accounting group
Comfortable presenting technical accounting positions and portfolio financial results directly to senior leadership and external auditors
Preferred Qualifications
Highly preferred: direct, hands-on experience with HLBV accounting in a renewable energy tax equity context, including serving as the final technical authority on related positions
Highly preferred: experience interpreting complex, negotiated LLC agreements for new tax equity or fund transactions and drafting the accounting memo and HLBV model design before close, partnering with Legal, Tax, and the Technical Accounting group
Experience with tax equity unwinds, buyouts, and restructurings (including post-flip HLBV treatment, remeasurement, and changes in ownership interest), and with ITC transferability and tax credit monetization structures
Proficiency in Excel-based financial modeling for HLBV, waterfall, and partnership allocation analysis, and familiarity with third-party tax equity investor reporting and model-review processes
Prior experience specifically in residential solar, C&I solar, distributed energy, battery storage, or other renewable asset portfolios (rather than oilfield services, E&P, or other non-renewable “energy” experience)
Experience with ASC 842 lessor accounting for residential and C&I lease and PPA portfolios
Experience with Microsoft Dynamics, Xero, Ramp, NetSuite, or BluePoint
Consolidation preparation experience
Interest in leveraging AI for accounting workflows
A verifiable reference from a single engagement or role of 6+ months, reflecting sustained ownership rather than short-term project work
