The Opportunity

At Root, we’re on a mission to improve the lives of our customers by offering better insurance solutions. We challenge ourselves to think differently in order to reimagine insurance to make it smarter, more equitable, and a better experience for all.

We strive to “unbreak” the archaic insurance industry by using data and technology in innovative new ways. We believe we must be steadfast in our commitment to research, experimentation, and disciplined data-driven decision making in order to build products our customers love.

Consumer auto insurance is a competitive industry, so offering an industry leading insurance product specifically tailored to each state is essential to differentiate ourselves from the competition. This team lives at the heart of our promise to “unbreak” auto insurance and deliver that world-class product. Our State Product Management team works alongside the actuarial and regulatory groups, with significant interactions with data scientists, product managers and engineers to decide how to set and implement state-based strategy at Root.

As a Senior State Product Manager, you'll be responsible for setting and advancing business strategy across a domain of Root's state-based auto insurance markets. You will be expected to identify and frame complex market problems, evaluate strategic options in novel situations, and drive cross-functional execution across actuarial, regulatory, underwriting, claims, marketing, distribution, product, data science, and engineering partners. This role requires a deep understanding of state management levers, market economics, regulatory nuance, and the second-order effects of product, pricing, and underwriting decisions.

Salary Range:  $141,400 - $176,800 (Bonus & LTI Eligible)

Root is a “work where it works best” company. Meaning we will support you working in whatever location that works best for you across the US. We will continue to have our headquarters in Columbus, Ohio.

How You Will Make an Impact

  • Drive domain strategy- identify and frame complex functional and market problems across multiple states; evaluate strategic options with empirical evidence where possible; make high-quality tradeoff decisions across teams in support of profitable growth and long-term business outcomes
  • Set and optimize market performance- proactively review state performance across a wide range of measures, design frameworks for analyzing market-specific problems, specify objective criteria for product and rate changes, and translate findings into meaningful pricing, underwriting, and product recommendations
  • Lead cross-functional execution- plan roadmaps and milestones for initiatives that intersect with multiple teams; keep overlapping workstreams unblocked; communicate status, risks, and decision points clearly to stakeholders and senior leaders
  • Advance regulatory strategy- use statutes, regulations, competitor filings, industry sources, prior experience, and legal partnership to identify compliance and product needs; write comprehensive product requirements and meaningfully contribute to filing strategy and objection responses
  • Build external and internal alignment- effectively manage relationships with Departments of Insurance and other external stakeholders while leveraging relationships across Root to drive action, alignment, and better strategic decisions

What You Will Need to Succeed

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Economics, or a related field; professional designations related to insurance are a plus
  • 7+ years of experience in the insurance industry, preferably in product management, underwriting, analytics, actuarial partnership, regulatory strategy, or a related role within personal lines insurance
  • Deep understanding of private passenger auto economics, state management levers, rate-level decisioning, underwriting strategy, and the first- and second-order effects of market-wide business decisions
  • Strong analytical judgment, including the ability to design analysis frameworks, define test parameters, interpret market data, and translate complex findings into actionable recommendations; SQL-based data analysis experience preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex and highly cross-functional topics clearly to senior leaders and executives, driving alignment, decisions, and action
  • Proven ability to lead through influence across actuarial, regulatory, product, data science, engineering, claims, underwriting, marketing, distribution, legal, and compliance partners
  • Ability to plan and manage multiple overlapping workstreams, prioritize across teams, coach others on incrementally delivering value, and keep high-impact initiatives unblocked in a fast-paced environment
