JOB DESCRIPTION:

Position Summary

The Senior Counsel, Regulatory Affairs serves as the principal legal advisor on healthcare regulatory matters, providing strategic guidance across a multi-state behavioral health system. Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer, the role supports compliance, reimbursement, licensing, privacy, audits, and investigations while minimizing regulatory risk.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Serve as lead legal advisor on healthcare regulatory matters. 

• Advise on federal and state healthcare laws. 

• Interpret statutes, regulations, and agency guidance. 

• Provide guidance regarding Medicare, Medicaid, privacy, licensing, and reimbursement compliance. 

• Manage legal aspects of audits and investigations. 

• Coordinate responses to regulatory agencies. 

• Support strategic initiatives, affiliations, and transactions. 

• Draft and review policies addressing regulatory requirements. 

• Conduct regulatory training and education. 

• Prepare reports for leadership and the Board.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school required.

Experience

• 10 years practicing healthcare regulatory law required. 

• 5 years of equivalent experience in healthcare

• Significant experience advising healthcare organizations on federal and state regulatory requirements required. 

Licenses and Certifications

Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Behavioral health experience

• In-house healthcare legal experience 

• Nonprofit healthcare experience 

• Experience with government investigations 

Physical and Work Environment Requirements

Work is performed in an office, clinical, residential, and/or community-based environment depending on role and assignment. The position may involve routine use of office, clinical, or electronic systems and equipment. Duties may require prolonged periods of sitting, standing, walking, and working at a computer. Work hours may include evenings, weekends, holidays, or extended shifts based on program needs. This position is classified as sedentary work. Sedentary work involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.

$175,420.00--$263,100.00
