Job Description: SAP PLMSI Developer (PLM-S/4HANA Integration)

Job Title: SAP PLMSI Developer
Location: [Remote / Hybrid]

US Citizen

Long Term

Position Overview

The SAP PLMSI Developer is responsible for designing, developing, configuring, and maintaining the integration between external Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems and SAP S/4HANA using the SAP Product Lifecycle Management System Integration (PLMSI) framework.

In this role, you will play a critical part in our digital thread initiative, ensuring that engineering data (EBOMs, 3D models, attributes) flows seamlessly from PLM into SAP S/4HANA Manufacturing, specifically feeding into Production Engineering and Operations (PEO) and Manufacturing Logistics Execution (MLE). You will collaborate closely with PLM engineers, SAP functional analysts, and business stakeholders to build robust, automated data pipelines that eliminate manual data entry and reduce time-to-market.

Key Responsibilities

1. PLMSI Configuration & Development

  • Configure and customize the SAP PLMSI framework to map, transform, and transfer engineering data from external PLM systems into SAP S/4HANA.
  • Develop and maintain integration logic, mapping rules, and data transformation schemas using SAP PLMSI standard tools and APIs.
  • Implement custom business logic, BAdIs, and user exits within the PLMSI framework to handle complex, customer-specific data structures.

2. Engineering-to-Manufacturing Integration (PEO & MLE)

  • Ensure seamless transfer of Engineering Bills of Materials (EBOMs) from PLM to SAP, enabling the smooth creation of Manufacturing Bills of Materials (MBOMs) and production routings within SAP PEO.
  • Align PLM data structures with SAP master data requirements (Material Masters, Document Info Records, Change Masters, and Work Centers).
  • Support the integration of engineering changes (Engineering Change Management - ECM) to ensure shop-floor logistics and manufacturing execution (MLE) are always working with the latest approved designs.

3. Technical Interface Management

  • Design, develop, and monitor interfaces using SAP Integration Suite (Cloud Integration/CPI), SAP Gateway (OData services), IDocs, and REST/SOAP APIs.
  • Collaborate with external PLM technical teams (e.g., Siemens Teamcenter, PTC Windchill) to align on interface contracts, payloads, and communication protocols.
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve interface errors, data mismatches, and performance bottlenecks in the integration pipeline.

4. Testing, Documentation, and Support

  • Create detailed technical design specifications, data mapping documents, and architecture diagrams.
  • Develop comprehensive test cases and execute Unit Testing, System Integration Testing (SIT), and support User Acceptance Testing (UAT).
  • Provide hypercare and ongoing tier-3 technical support for the PLMSI integration, identifying root causes of data transmission failures and implementing permanent fixes.

Required Qualifications & Skills

Experience

  • Hands-on development experience within the SAP ecosystem, with a strong focus on SAP PLM or PLM-ERP integration.
  • Direct experience configuring and developing with the SAP PLMSI (Product Lifecycle Management System Integration) framework.
  • Experience working with SAP S/4HANA, particularly manufacturing modules like PEO (Production Engineering and Operations) or PP/PP-DS.

Technical Skills

  • Strong ABAP development skills, including Object-Oriented ABAP, BAdIs, User Exits, and Enhancement Frameworks.
  • Proficiency in SAP integration technologies: OData Services (SAP Gateway), SAP Integration Suite / CPI, ALE/IDocs, and RFCs.
  • Solid understanding of PLM concepts (Part management, EBOM/MBOM transformation, Change Management, Document Management).
  • Familiarity with XML, JSON, and API testing tools (e.g., Postman, SoapUI).

Soft Skills

  • Excellent analytical and debugging skills to trace data flows across complex, multi-system landscapes.
  • Strong communication skills to bridge the gap between engineering teams (PLM) and manufacturing/IT teams (SAP).
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in an Agile/Scrum development environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience integrating SAP with major PLM platforms such as Siemens Teamcenter, PTC Windchill, or Dassault 3DEXPERIENCE.
  • SAP certifications in ABAP Development, SAP Integration Suite, or SAP PLM.
  • Knowledge of SAP Manufacturing Execution (ME) or Digital Manufacturing (DM).
