Recommerce Strategy Consultant
About TOMORROW
Tomorrow is a global strategic retail consulting firm. We advise leading retailers, brands and digital platforms on how to thrive in today’s digitally-driven retail environment — from digital channel strategy and store-based fulfillment to customer data and concept incubation.
We’ve lived the journey — inside the world’s largest retailers and alongside leading digital platforms — and we know what it takes to actually deliver, not just advise. Our foundation is retail. Our backgrounds are in building and leading retail businesses. Our passion is helping clients who lead today win tomorrow.
The engagement
Contract · Business Build · Recommerce, Trade-In & Circular Retail
Tomorrow is hiring a senior-level independent contractor to define, build and scale a recommerce business for a major retail client. Recommerce is about recovering profit from returns and overstocks, while supporting the circular economy through trade-ins and pre-owned items — work that sits at the intersection of strategy development, new business building and senior stakeholder alignment.
This is a 0-to-1 build that becomes an operating role. The early focus is strategy: scoping the questions that matter, running the research, and landing recommendations senior leaders act on. Once initiatives move from decision to launch, you own delivery, the operating rhythm and the commercial results — working across commercial, operational, product, partner, customer and enablement teams, most of whom have competing priorities and no reporting line to you.
Engagement details
• Type — Independent Contractor
• Time commitment — Approximately 37.5 hours per week
• Duration — 6 months minimum, with potential to extend
• Location — Remote — consideration for this position is not based on location
• Working hours — North American business hours required
• Travel — Up to 10%
• Start — ASAP — target within approximately one month
What you’ll work on
• Own the strategy end to end — Size the opportunity, frame the options, build the financial case, and land a recommendation senior leaders will act on.
• Build the fact base — Run the market and competitor scans, peer benchmarking, customer insight and unit economics modeling yourself, so every decision rests on evidence rather than assertion.
• Design and launch the business — Stand up trade-in, pre-owned and third-party recommerce services, each with a clear commercial model, operating model and go-to-market plan.
• Align senior stakeholders — Build the argument, test it with the people who have to deliver it, work through objections in the room, and drive decisions without direct authority.
• Hold the operating rhythm — Translate approved strategy into workplans, owners, milestones, risks and decision points, and build the playbooks, governance forums, SOPs and tools that make the business repeatable as it scales.
• Own it once it is live — Shift from designing the strategy to running it, driving growth against real commercial and operational targets.
About you
• 8–12+ years across strategy and retail — Spanning strategy development and retail or e-commerce, including time spent producing the analysis and recommendations that senior leaders act on.
• You have built a business, not just a case for one — Track record of launching new businesses or business lines from concept through to live operation, with accountability for the commercial outcome.
• Research and structuring — Able to scope an ambiguous question, build a fact base from primary and secondary sources, and reach a defensible recommendation under time pressure.
• Influence without authority — Proven ability to align senior stakeholders you do not manage, and to synthesize complex information into a clear, persuasive case.
• Commercial fluency — Comfortable with unit economics, P&L logic, business case modeling, and defining the metrics that show whether the business is working.
• Bias toward action — Strong problem-solving, able to move from diagnosis to implementation quickly while managing tradeoffs.
• Comfortable across strategy and execution — Willing to own delivery once the decisions are made, and to shift gear as the business matures.
• Adaptable and resilient — Highly collaborative in fast-paced, evolving environments where the shape of the problem changes month to month.
Bonus points
• Experience in returns, reverse logistics, liquidation or overstock channels.
• Experience with trade-in or pre-owned resale, built in-house or through a third-party partner.
• Familiarity with circular economy business models and the reporting that comes with them.
