The Principal Software Engineer leads the design and delivery of performant, accessible, and resilient user interfaces while setting front-end architecture and coding standards. They partner with cross-functional teams to shape technical roadmaps and mentor senior engineers to foster an inclusive engineering culture.

About the team

The Principal, Software Engineering, Front End leads the design and delivery of performant, accessible, and resilient user interfaces across Zillow’s consumer and partner experiences. This role sets front-end architecture and coding standards, drives cross-team alignment on web application strategy, and mentors engineers to build intuitive, scalable solutions that power Zillow’s “super app” vision and real-estate marketplace.

About the role

- Define and evolve front-end architecture, patterns, and best practices to deliver secure, performant, and maintainable web experiences at scale. - Lead the design and implementation of complex, consumer-facing features and UI systems from concept through launch, balancing customer impact, technical risk, and operational excellence. - Partner with product, design, back-end, and data teams to shape roadmaps, translate ambiguous customer problems into technical strategies, and align investments across multiple squads. - Raise the engineering bar by reviewing critical code and designs, setting quality standards (testing, accessibility, reliability), and guiding teams through trade-offs in a high-scale, distributed environment. - Coach and mentor senior and staff engineers, building technical leadership capacity across teams and fostering an inclusive, growth-oriented engineering culture. - Evaluate and introduce modern front-end technologies, frameworks, and tooling to improve developer productivity, site performance, and customer experience while managing long-term platform health. - Influence organization-wide engineering decisions and cross-functional initiatives, using data and experimentation to drive continuous improvement in front-end experiences and outcomes.

This role has been categorized as a teleworker position. Teleworkers do not have a permanent corporate office workplace and instead work from a physical location of their choice, which must be identified to the Company. Employees may live anywhere in Mexico, with availability to travel to Mexico City, as we recommend attendance at occasional office events.

In addition to a competitive base salary and benefits, this position is also eligible for equity awards based on factors such as experience, performance and location.

Who you are

- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field. - 10+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production web applications, including significant experience with modern JavaScript/TypeScript front-end frameworks. - Demonstrated experience leading the end-to-end technical design and delivery of complex, high-visibility front-end initiatives across multiple teams. - Proven track record influencing architecture, standards, and technical direction for large-scale, consumer-facing or enterprise web experiences. - Experience mentoring and developing other engineers, including senior-level talent, in a collaborative, distributed environment. - Experience working in cloud-based environments and collaborating closely with back-end, data, and product teams to deliver integrated solutions. - Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
