Position Overview
This position will be part of a team responsible for supporting the technical infrastructure including hardware, software, and cloud service provider components for the United States Army Recruiting Command (USAREC) contract. This role will serve as a growing technical resource, assisting with the implementation, administration, and support of Red Hat OpenShift environments, including onboarding applications into the platform, in alignment with USAREC's broader cloud migration and architecture initiatives, working alongside more senior engineers. The role includes support of Linux and Windows server environments, virtualization platforms, and DoD-compliant systems, while contributing to containerization and cloud modernization initiatives in support of Army recruiting operations.
Major Activities
- Assist in mapping the relationship between IT platform/infrastructure components (i.e. Technology End Users, IT System Software & Hardware, and info-Communications Transmission Networks).
- Support the identification of key technology interactions and dependencies across systems/platforms.
- Investigate and troubleshoot system issues to identify root causes, escalating as needed to ensure timely resolution.
- Assist in the deployment, configuration, and day-to-day administration of Red Hat OpenShift clusters.
- Support system monitoring and performance optimization efforts across Linux and Windows server environments.
- Assist in implementing and maintaining backup strategies to ensure data integrity and availability.
- Support documentation and configuration baselining of systems, testing, or modification of IT infrastructure.
- Research new tools and technologies and provide input on their potential application to team initiatives.
- Assist with incident escalation and coordination of resources to resolve issues in a timely manner to meet Service Level Agreement (SLA) metrics.
- Support Disaster Recovery/Continuity of Operations (DR/COOP) exercises, testing, and live incidents per established procedures and policies.
- Support security and integrity controls, including patching, vulnerability remediation, and DISA STIG compliance audits across Linux and Windows systems.
- Prepare technical documentation, training material, and status reports.
- Assist in evaluating hardware/software procurement options and their total cost of ownership.
- Perform other duties as appropriate and assigned.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Strong knowledge of Linux server administration and skill in installing, configuring, patching, and troubleshooting Linux servers (e.g., RHEL) in a virtualized environment.
- Strong knowledge of Windows Server administration and skill in managing Windows Server environments (e.g., Windows Server 2012/2019, Active Directory, SCCM, and Group Policy).
- Ability to administer and support virtualization platforms such as Hyper-V, vCenter, and VMware.
- Exposure to containerization concepts and/or Red Hat OpenShift/Kubernetes is a plus, but not required willingness to learn is key.
- Ability to work effectively within DoD and other government environments, including NIPR support, DISA STIG compliance, and vulnerability management practices (e.g., ACAS).
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to use diagnostic and monitoring tools, logs, and performance data to help maintain system health and availability.
- Ability to communicate technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical staff.
- Good interpersonal skills: ability to work effectively and cooperatively with all levels of management, staff, and outside business associates.
- Strong organizational, follow-up, and detail-oriented skills, with experience supporting change management processes and cross-team coordination.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, with appropriate supervision.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- High degree of sensitivity regarding confidential and sensitive information.
Physical Abilities
- Sufficient fine motor skills for the use of computers, calculators, with an ability to withstand repetitive keyboarding for extended periods of time.
- Visual and communications ability adequate to perform the essential functions of the job.
- Ability to kneel, bend, and twist at the waist on an occasional basis.
- Ability to reach below shoulder height with regular frequency (desk position) and at or above shoulder height on occasion.
- Ability to push, pull, carry, and lift objects weighing up to 10 pounds on a regular basis, and greater weights on an occasional basis.
- Ability to travel by vehicle or aircraft, and ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Interdisciplinary Studies, or a related field, plus at least one year of relevant IT experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience supporting and administering Linux and Windows server environments, including system configuration, maintenance, patching, and troubleshooting.
- Ability to pass a background investigation and drug screening.
- Must have identification compliant with the Real ID Act at time of hire.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior military or government leadership experience.
- Hands-on exposure to Red Hat OpenShift, Kubernetes, or other container orchestration platforms.
- Experience with virtualization technologies (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V, vCenter).
- Familiarity with the Azure or AWS cloud ecosystem, including deploying, upgrading, or migrating applications and infrastructure to the cloud.
- Experience with Active Directory, Identity Management, or related tools (e.g., Entra ID, Okta, Ping Identity).
- Relevant certifications such as CompTIA Security+, CompTIA Network+, Linux+, or Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA).
- Familiarity with DISA STIG compliance and DoD security requirements, including supporting quarterly or recurring security audits.
- Basic scripting/automation experience (e.g., PowerShell, Bash, Ansible).
- Agile/Scrum or change management certification (e.g., SAFe Scrum Master) a plus.
