Job Details: Level: Entry, Job Location: PBLWorks Home Office - San Rafael, CA, Salary Range: $60000.00 - $85000.00Salary/year, Position Summary
The Marketing and Communications Associate is responsible for the successful planning and execution of marketing projects related to branding, digital marketing, and events to develop and deepen our relationships with our audiences by driving awareness of PBLWorks’ brand, products, and services. This position reports to the Chief Revenue Officer, who will provide direct mentorship and structured onboarding, making this a strong next step for someone early in their marketing career with a demonstrated track record of writing, design, digital media, and deadline-driven production.
This role calls for someone with strong communication instincts, real project-management experience (even if it wasn’t earned in a corporate job), high attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively across teams — including the judgment to manage day-to-day work independently once given direction.
Key Responsibilities:
Under the guidance of the Chief Revenue Officer, implement strategies that expand our brand presence and strengthen our marketing, positioning, and brand integrity in service of the organization’s growth goals.
Develop and execute marketing and communications materials to publicize existing and new products, services, publications, and events (including PBL World and regional conferences), supporting our go-to-market strategy and stakeholder adoption.
Write and design compelling content aligned with the PBLWorks style guide.
Build and manage the PBLWorks editorial calendar and related strategies for marketing channels (blog, email, social media, webpages) to drive engagement and growth, including B2C sales and B2B lead generation.
Execute email marketing and automation campaigns, with training provided on our specific tools, and help track engagement to better understand our audience.
Support projects to develop brand-aligned collateral for digital and print (catalogs, landing pages, sales sheets, postcards), working alongside vendors and colleagues.
Track data for the Marketing team’s key performance indicators and help produce regular reporting so the team can iterate on strategy.
Manage the inventory of brand-aligned materials (slide decks, microsites), and maintain our internal hubs for brand assets and communications style.
Collaborate across the organization on communications and marketing initiatives that strengthen the customer journey and drive revenue.
Bring a curious, data-informed mindset to continuous improvement.
Other duties as assigned.
Requirements, Skills, and Abilities
The successful candidate believes in PBLWorks’ core values, is driven by our mission and vision, shares our commitment to advancing racial equity, and is comfortable breaking new ground to lead social change.
0–2 years of professional experience. Strongly preferred: significant experience in scholastic journalism — high school or college newspaper, yearbook, literary magazine, or similar student-run publication — in an editorial, design, or editor-in-chief capacity. This kind of experience (managing deadlines, writing and editing copy, laying out pages, coordinating with a team of contributors) is exactly the foundation this role is built on.
Interest in or exposure to K-12 education or EdTech is a plus, not a requirement.
A portfolio or work samples (articles, layouts, designs, social content) that show range in writing and visual storytelling.
Comfort with Google Suite (Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides) is required. Experience with Adobe Suite (especially InDesign, from yearbook or newspaper layout) and Canva is a strong plus. Experience with email marketing tools (Account Engagement/Pardot) and CRMs (Salesforce) is a bonus — we’ll train on these.
Demonstrated ability to see a project through from idea to finished product, on a deadline.
Ability to work independently and manage one’s own workload and timelines once given direction, without needing close oversight on routine tasks.
Bring a curious, data-informed mindset to continuous improvement.
Skills and Abilities
Strong writer and editor with graphic design sensibility and a do-it-yourself attitude.
Comfortable giving and receiving feedback, and improving work based on it.
Organized, detail-oriented, and able to juggle multiple deadlines at once.
A great listener who collaborates easily with people across a team.
Self-directed, with sound judgment about when to move forward independently and when to flag something for input.
Eager to learn, coachable, and energized by a fast-paced environment.
Attributes
Integrity, a positive attitude, and self-direction.
Belief in transparency, open communication, and lifting up the people around you.
Passionate about equity in the workplace and in education.
A team player who builds trust quickly.
An energetic self-starter who thrives with mentorship and room to grow.
