The Shorefast Institute for Place-Based Economies

About the Role

Title: Manager, Shorenet and Convening

Team: Shorenet (Shorefast Institute for Place-Based Economies)

Location:  Remote work position, available to applicants based in Fogo Island or St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, or in the Toronto (GTA) region of Ontario.

Who We Are

The Shorefast Institute for Place-Based Economies is a program of Shorefast, one of the largest social enterprise organizations in Canada. The Institute brings together economic actors from communities, governments, and markets to develop, refine, and expand place-based approaches to economic development.

Through structured learning exchanges, resource sharing, and convenings, the Institute supports communities across Canada in shaping their own economic futures. Our work includes the ShoreNet network, the Economic Nutrition initiative, and other tools that make economic systems more visible and understood.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a candidate who is a skilled convenor and effective communicator, practical and grounded, with genuine curiosity about place-based economic development and a roll-up-your-sleeves orientation. The Manager, Shorenet and Convening will focus on leading Shorenet, the Institute’s practitioner network and learning system, and holding accountabilities for all the Institute’s convenings — including Fogo Sessions, Regional Gatherings, Leadership Gatherings, and the “[Name] in Place” thematic brand. Reporting to the Program Director, this position will lead a small and growing team, carry financial accountability for the stream’s earned revenue, and represent the Institute externally alongside the Institute Lead and Program Director.

What You'll Do

Shorenet Leadership and Development

  • Lead the development and growth of Shorenet, building a peer network where knowledge moves laterally between places
  • Own the member experience end-to-end — recruitment, conversion, onboarding, and ongoing engagement — working with the Shorenet Network Manager
  • Set the direction for Shorenet's learning programmes and online learning offerings, ensuring they're rigorous and connected to the network and convenings
  • Oversee development and curation of Shorenet's toolsets and resources library, including the ABCDE methodology
  • Own development of the “[Name] in Place” thematic brand and convening architecture, in coordination with other Shorefast entities where expressions sit elsewhere
  • Strengthen connections across the Institute's three streams — receiving the certified-organization pipeline from Economic Nutrition and feeding patterns of practice back to The Forge

Convening

  • Lead the design, delivery, and follow-through of all Institute convenings
  • Lead the planning and delivery of Regional Gatherings and Leadership Gatherings, including partnered events
  • Lead convenings that express the “[Name] in Place” architecture as named programme streams
  • Ensure every convening produces post-event knowledge outputs that feed the Institute's evidence base

Consulting

  • Own the Institute's consulting practice as a Shorenet add-on that generates earned revenue and reusable content
  • Lead delivery of smaller workshops and share delivery of the wider consulting portfolio

Team Leadership

  • Provide day-to-day direction and support to direct reports, setting clear priorities and manageable workloads
  • Support the professional development of direct reports and build team capacity over time

Financial Accountability

  • Carry financial accountability for the Shorenet stream's earned-revenue targets across memberships, learning programmes, consulting, and gatherings
  • Develop and manage the stream's budget, monitor performance, and flag variances to the Program Director

Coordination and Partnerships

  • Maintain relationships with partner communities and organizations engaged in Shorenet
  • Represent the Institute externally at conferences, panels, and sector convenings
  • Contribute to funding proposals and grant applications relevant to the stream

Qualifications and Experience

  • Five to ten years of relevant experience in community economic development, network or membership leadership, convening, program delivery, consulting, or a related field
  • Deep knowledge of the Canadian community economic development field, with credibility among practitioners
  • Demonstrated ability to build a peer network where people and places learn from each other, rather than to administer a platform
  • Facilitation credentials and experience leading workshops, gatherings, and multi-party convenings
  • Strong organizational skills, with experience holding multiple concurrent workstreams and events without losing track of details or people
  • Experience managing people; able to lead a small team with clarity and care
  • Comfortable with budget ownership and earned-revenue responsibility
  • A degree(s) in a relevant field
  • Bilingualism in English and French would be an asset
  • Willing to travel to Fogo Island and other partner communities as required
  • Committed to the values and mission of Shorefast; understands what it means to work in service of place

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary ($100,000 – $110,000 per annum)
  • Health and dental benefits, along with access to an employee assistance program for mental health support and work/life services
  • Team member discounts within our businesses (Fogo Island Inn and Fogo Island Workshops)
  • The technology necessary to complete your work, along with a cellphone plan
  • An engaged, highly supportive, and collaborative environment that encourages creativity and curiosity
  • The opportunity to work in a thriving social enterprise
  • Continued learning and professional development training
