Position Summary:

Internet2 is seeking an experienced manager of network engineering to lead a team of engineers responsible for the delivery and support of new and enhanced platform services. This role oversees the successful modifications of optical and packet infrastructure, as well as, colocation facility changes, enabling innovative services for the Internet2 community.

This position, Manager, Network Engineering, will contribute to technology roadmaps and implementation strategies, drive continuous improvement of operational systems and processes, and support the Internet2 community in the successful adoption and implementation of services. Working closely with stakeholders at the national, regional, and campus levels, this individual will lead a team that addresses complex customer and network challenges while serving as an escalation point for the Network Operations Center (NOC), service desk, and break-fix teams.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

• Leadership & People Management: Mentors technical teams, drives performance management, supports career development, and leads recruitment and onboarding efforts. 

• Service Deployment & Implementation: Leads successful deployments and operationalization of complex network services and infrastructure, collaborating across technical teams to deliver routing, transport, and automation initiatives.

• Project & Operational Management: Oversees project and operational delivery, including quality assurance, issue resolution, and continuous improvement initiatives in mission-critical environments.

• Logistics & Infrastructure Coordination: Coordinates network infrastructure logistics, procurement, inventory management, and facility readiness to support successful service deployments.

• Escalation & Incident Support: Leads critical-incident escalations, partnering with operations teams to ensure operational continuity and resolve customer-impacting issues.

The Ideal Candidate:

• Proven engineering leader with experience managing teams and delivering services in complex, 24x7 network operations environments.

• Strong technical background in IP networking, internet infrastructure, routing protocols, and large-scale network deployments.

• Collaborative engineering leader with strong project management and problem-solving skills, experienced in driving operational excellence, managing stakeholder and vendor relationships, and leading cross-functional teams through complex technical challenges.

• Familiarity with the Internet2 network is a bonus.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Sciences, IT (or related field); or equivalent professional experience.

• 3+ years of management role guiding a team with complex computer systems, software, and network deployment

• 3+ years working in a metrics-driven 24x7x365 operations environment

• Strong project management and problem-solving skills

• IP networking fundamentals and direct experience with implementing applications using IP protocols

• Experience with Internet ecosystems, including some of the following:  open exchanges, cloud/peering, colocation, or transport infrastructure

• Knowledge or experience with physical connectivity at all layers, including DC cabling, power distribution, cross-connects, DWDM transmission systems

• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to both engineering and executive audiences.

• Must be able to work in a remote environment and support a team distributed across multiple time zones.

• Ability to travel up to 30% per year.

• Ability to lift up to 50lbs.

Preferred Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience in multi-site campus, ISP, WAN, and/or carrier networks

• Experience with global backbone architectures

• Familiarity with Unix and/or Python

• Familiarity with Network Automation such as NSO

• Experience with Internet Routing Protocols such as ISIS, OSPF, and SR-MPLS

• Experience with Cisco NCS/ASR/8200 Platforms (ISO-XR) and Juniper EX/MX platforms

• Familiarity with Route Policy, Traffic Analysis, and Troubleshooting, particularly in BGP and Layer 1 Networking Environments

Pay Grade: IT-5

Expected Hiring Range: $125,600 - $141,300

Starting salary is commensurate and may vary with experience and education.

For pay transparency purposes, the full salary range is: $125,600 - $188,400
