Manager, Medical Affairs – Burn Care
Position Summary
The Manager, Medical Affairs – Burn Care provides strategic and operational leadership for Vericel's Burn Care Medical Science Liaison (MSL) team. This role is responsible for leading a high-performing field medical organization that delivers scientific excellence, generates actionable medical insights, strengthens relationships with key external experts, and supports the successful execution of Vericel's Burn Care Medical Affairs strategy.
The Manager is accountable for recruiting, developing, coaching, and evaluating a geographically dispersed team of Medical Science Liaisons while ensuring consistent execution of field medical priorities, scientific engagement strategies, and compliance with all applicable regulatory and company standards.
Working cross-functionally with Clinical Development, Medical Communications, Commercial, Marketing, Regulatory Affairs, Market Access, and Research & Development, this role translates scientific insights into actionable medical strategies that improve patient care and advance the Burn Care franchise.
While the primary responsibility of this position is leading the Burn Care MSL organization, the Manager will also maintain selective field medical engagement to support business needs. This may include providing scientific support in designated geographies, during periods of organizational growth, territory vacancies, or evolving business priorities while ensuring appropriate workload distribution across the MSL team.
Location: This is a remote position with up to 60% travel. The ideal candidate will be based in the Midwest and have convenient access to a major airport.
Essential Responsibilities:
Medical Affairs Leadership
- Lead the execution of Vericel's Burn Care Medical Affairs education, publication, and research brand plan strategies, as defined by corporate and departmental goals, through a high-performing team of Medical Science Liaisons.
- Establish clear priorities, objectives, and performance expectations aligned with Medical Affairs and corporate goals, while fostering a culture of scientific excellence, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Serve as a resource for the Burn Care MSL Team regarding internal workflow business processes, Veeva MedComms data input and analysis, the IST grant application process, as well as publication and educational program development.
- Evaluate organizational effectiveness and recommend improvements to optimize field medical performance and customer engagement.
People Leadership
- Recruit, coach, develop, and retain a geographically dispersed team of Medical Science Liaisons.
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing coaching, mentoring, and development.
- Monitor field activity, productivity, and quality to ensure consistent execution of Medical Affairs objectives.
- Optimize field coverage, workload distribution, and customer engagement across assigned territories.
Scientific & Medical Strategy
- Translate field medical insights into strategic recommendations that inform evidence generation, publication planning, medical education, and lifecycle management.
- Identify, communicate, and translate key clinical and educational field insights from industry leaders to Medical Affairs management, while contributing to and participating in the annual brand planning process for the Vericel Burn Care Franchise.
- Maintain current knowledge of burn care, cell therapy, regenerative medicine, competitive therapies, and emerging scientific developments.
Field Coverage
- Provide direct field medical support in designated geographies, as business needs require.
- Establish and maintain strategic scientific relationships with Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs), investigators, burn centers, and healthcare professionals.
- Balance direct field engagement with leadership responsibilities while leveraging the MSL team to ensure appropriate workload distribution.
External Scientific Engagement
- Guide the team's engagement strategy with Key Opinion Leaders, investigators, healthcare professionals, and professional societies.
- Ensure scientific interactions are compliant, meaningful, and aligned with Medical Affairs objectives.
- Represent Vericel at national and regional scientific meetings, advisory boards, and medical congresses as appropriate.
- Support strategic external partnerships that strengthen Vericel's scientific leadership within burn care.
Cross-Functional Leadership
Partner closely with Clinical Development, Medical Communications, Commercial, Marketing, Market Access, Regulatory Affairs, Research & Development, and Clinical Operations to ensure alignment across medical initiatives while maintaining the scientific independence and integrity of Medical Affairs.
Medical Operations & Compliance
- Monitor medical education activities of the Burn Care MSL Team to ensure compliance with all Vericel company, Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), Medical Science Liaison Society (MSLS), and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines.
- Oversee quality and consistency of field medical documentation and scientific exchange.
- Coordinate with the Medical Communications Director to produce monthly, quarterly, and annual reports on the field activities of the Burn Care MSL Team, as well as on a requested ad-hoc basis.
- Support medical planning, publication activities, investigator-sponsored research processes, and scientific communication initiatives.
Business Leadership
- Analyze medical insights, competitive intelligence, and marketplace trends to identify opportunities and risks.
- Develop meaningful performance metrics and dashboards that demonstrate the impact of field medical activities.
- Drive continuous improvement of Medical Affairs processes, field operations, and organizational effectiveness.
- Recommend organizational and resource strategies that support the continued growth of the Burn Care franchise.
Qualifications:
Required
- Advanced clinical or scientific degree(MD, PharmD, PhD, MSN, NP, PA, DNP, or equivalent).
- Minimum of 7 years of progressive Medical Affairs experience, including significant field Medical Science Liaison experience.
- Previous people leadership or management experience leading field-based medical teams.
- Demonstrated expertise in burn care, wound care, surgery, regenerative medicine, cell therapy, or related therapeutic areas.
- Strong understanding of Medical Affairs regulations, scientific exchange, and compliant interactions with healthcare professionals.
- Excellent leadership, coaching, communication, project management, and collaboration skills.
Preferred
- Experience leading geographically dispersed field medical teams.
- Experience in regenerative medicine, biologics, or advanced therapies.
- Experience with Veeva CRM and Medical Affairs analytics.
- Demonstrated success leading cross-functional initiatives and organizational change.
Working Conditions
- Remote field-based position within the United States, with the ability to travel up to 60%, including overnight and occasional weekend travel.
- Must reside within reasonable proximity to a major airport.
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain hospital credentialing.
- Must be willing to attend surgical procedures and scientific meetings.
- Must be able to lift and transport educational materials, instrument trays, and equipment up to 40 pounds.

This position includes commission-based compensation, with an expected target range from $185,000 to $195,000.
The actual salary offered will be determined based on factors such as the candidate’s qualifications, experience, and skills. Bonus, incentive pay, equity and benefits may be provided in addition to the base compensation listed above.
