AI Summary

Lead and coach a team of senior data practitioners to develop and maintain content performance metrics. Collaborate with business leaders in Content, Finance, and Product to define measurement strategies and ensure high-quality analytical rigor.

At Netflix, our mission is to entertain the world. Together, we are writing the next episode - pushing the boundaries of storytelling, global fandom and making the unimaginable a reality. We are a dream team obsessed with the uncomfortable excitement of discovering what happens when you merge creativity, intuition and cutting-edge technology. Come be a part of what’s next.

Content & Games Data Science and Engineering (DSE) is the data science and engineering organization for Netflix's content and games businesses. We work closely with leaders in Content, Finance, and Product, and our work includes statistical research, modeling, and the data products people use to make decisions.

Measurement Science & Analytics (MSA) is responsible for how we measure content performance. The team develops and maintains the metrics Netflix uses to understand how its content is doing, and does the analysis that helps leaders interpret them. As the business grows into new areas, new measurement questions come up regularly, and the team works out how to answer them with the right level of rigor.

We're looking for a manager to lead MSA, a team of senior data practitioners with a mix of technical skill sets. We want someone who can go deep on methodology with the team and who cares about helping each person on it do their best work.

What you will do

  • Hire and coach a team of senior individual contributors, giving them the context and room to lead their own work.
  • Hold a high bar for the quality of the team's science and analysis, and give direct, useful feedback on methodology.
  • Make sure each metric has a clear owner and is well maintained. Team members own individual metrics; you support them and get involved when a decision needs it.
  • Develop a view on how our measurement should change over time, and shape it with business leaders in Content, Finance, and Product.
  • Help partners work out what to measure when new questions come up, and how much rigor the answer needs.
  • Set and maintain the practices the broader organization uses to build and validate measurements.
  • Work with data engineering and product teams so that established metrics are reliable and well documented for the people who use them.

Your background and characteristics

  • 3+ years managing technical teams, ideally with a mix of technical skill sets, with a track record of hiring well and helping people grow
  • A strong coach who gives candid feedback with care, helps people see where they can grow, and develops senior individual contributors into leaders
  • An advanced degree in statistics, economics, or another quantitative field, or equivalent experience
  • A background as a hands-on data scientist, with depth in areas such as statistical modeling, causal inference, or experimentation
  • Experience designing and validating metrics, including proxy metrics, checking a metric against the outcome it stands in for, and understanding its variance
  • Experience running metrics in production across organizations, including definitions, governance, and change management
  • Experience explaining analysis and its limits to senior, non-technical audiences
  • Comfort working on problems that haven't been defined yet
  • A deep curiosity about the mix of art and science that goes into making great content; experience in entertainment is a plus but not required
  • Enthusiasm for and compatibility with Netflix culture
