This role can be based anywhere in Australia, our HQ is in Adelaide & hybrid working is available there or remote first in other states. Fleet Space is looking for a Legal Counsel to support our General Counsel on a wide range of legal matters, with a particular focus on international contracts, sales and procurement with the mining / mineral exploration industry.
This is a hands-on, in-house role in a fast pace Technology company and you will work end-to-end on most matters, from troubleshooting, giving advice on management of commercial and other areas of risk exposure, drafting and reviewing agreements through to securing signatures on final documents.
If you haven't heard of Fleet Space before, we are on a mission to help humanity explore and connect the Earth, Moon, and Mars. From our Adelaide headquarters, we've launched one of Australia's largest satellite constellations and built ExoSphere: our end-to-end mineral exploration solution that uses smart seismic sensors connected in real time via our own satellites, combined with AI to image the subsurface in days rather than months. It's how we're accelerating the discovery of the critical minerals needed for the clean energy transition.
Key Responsibilities
This role works closely with the General Counsel and partners across the business - including commercial, engineering and people teams - to provide practical, timely legal support with contracts and procurement at the centre of the role.
Contracts & Procurement
- Assess, draft and negotiate a wide range of commercial contracts, including customer contracts, supplier and procurement agreements, and international transactions.
- Support procurement processes end-to-end, including contract review, negotiation with vendors and suppliers, and risk assessment.
- Implement effective contractual handovers to business management once agreements are finalised.
- Manage non-disclosure agreements, and support trademark and intellectual property protections.
Legal Advisory Support
- Advise the business on intellectual property, patent management, employee relations, commercial risk and corporate governance matters.
- Review and advise on grants, research and collaborative partnership agreements.
- Support the implementation of Fleet's enterprise risk management framework, including assessing, measuring and mitigating Fleet's exposure to risk, and reporting for decision-making purposes.
Governance & Litigation Support
- Assist with the preparation of board papers and support the General Counsel in board and governance processes;
- Support the management of legal claims and litigation.
- Coordinate execution and signature of legal documents across the business.
- Support corporate international affairs, regulatory compliance, and export and trade law matters; and
- Assist with parent and international subsidiary governance.
What we are looking for:- Around 5-8 years of total experience with some In-house legal experience is essential; time in a law firm is valuable, but a genuine track record working in-house is a must.
- Contract law as a clear strength in your experience and knowledge.
- Experience working across international jurisdictions, not just Australia, given Fleet's global customers and entities.
- Exposure to the mining or mineral exploration sectors or oil and gas.
- Comfortable negotiating contracts directly with non-lawyers (geologists, mining managers, HR and others) and translating legal concepts into plain, practical language.
- Highly hands-on, with little to no delegation in this role - comfortable managing your own filing, admin and end-to-end matters.
- Experience in a startup or fast-paced environment is a plus, and reflects the ad-hoc, hands-on nature of this role.
- Broad legal knowledge across IP, trademarks, commercial risk, employee relations, regulatory compliance, export and trade law, and corporate governance.
About Fleet Space
Fleet Space Technologies' vision from the beginning was to build technologies to help humanity explore and connect the Earth, Moon, and Mars.
This led us to develop and launch one of Australia's largest constellation of satellites, create our satellite-enabled mineral exploration technology (ExoSphere), and send Australia's first seismic technology (SPIDER) to the Moon in 2026. ExoSphere, our end-to-end mineral exploration solution powered by space and AI, aims to accelerate critical mineral discovery needed for the clean energy technologies foundational to humanity's future.
As part of Fleet's founding vision, we also apply our technology to innovative solutions for defense and space exploration, including an upcoming mission to the Moon. Headquartered in Adelaide, South Australia, Fleet has rapidly grown to over 180 employees including a growing team in the USA, Canada, and beyond.
We have raised over $200M AUD in venture funding, backed by premier investors including Blackbird, TVG, Grok, and In-Q-Tel including our most recent $150M Series D in December 2024, at a valuation of over $800M.
