About the role
Honeycoin is hiring a mid-level Legal & Compliance Associate to own document review and regulatory work across our French-speaking markets. You will review and negotiate NDAs, commercial contracts and regulatory documents in French and English, and turn them around fast enough that deals and licence applications never wait on legal.
Honeycoin is a cross-border payments and stablecoin company operating across Africa and beyond. We are expanding in Francophone Africa, including Senegal and Cameroon, where contracts, regulator correspondence and partner negotiations happen in French.
Level: Mid-level (roughly 3–6 years' experience)
Team: Legal, Licensing & Market Expansion
Location: Douala or Dakar preferred; open to other major cities across Francophone Africa. Some travel
Working model: Remote
Languages: French and English, both at professional written and spoken level
What we need
• A law degree; admission to the bar or an equivalent professional qualification is welcome but not required.
• Roughly 3–6 years reviewing and negotiating commercial contracts, in a law firm, in-house or in a compliance function.
• Excellent French and English, written and spoken. You can redline a contract, write to a regulator and run a negotiation call in either language.
• Sound commercial judgement: you separate real risk from noise and say which points are worth fighting for.
• Clear, short writing. You can summarise a 40-page agreement in five lines a non-lawyer can act on.
• Working knowledge of at least one Francophone African legal environment.
What we filter for
This matters more to us than where you trained or which sector you come from. We hire for high agency and self-drive, and we look for evidence of it.
• You own outcomes, not tasks. "I sent the email" is not done; the signed contract or the lodged application is done.
• You move without being chased. You set your own deadlines, report status before anyone asks, and name blockers and who is causing them.
• You find a way. When a regulator goes quiet or counsel is slow, you call, escalate, visit or find another route.
• You learn fast. You have taken on an area of law or a market you did not know and become useful in it within weeks.
• You are reliable. People trust your review enough to sign on it.
In your application, show us: something you started without being asked, a problem you solved that was not your job, or a result you delivered with little guidance. Be specific about what you did and what changed.
A big plus
• Experience in fintech, payments, mobile money, banking or digital assets.
• Hands-on work with payment or e-money licensing, or direct dealings with BCEAO, BEAC, COBAC or a national regulator.
• Knowledge of OHADA company and commercial law.
• Experience with AML/CFT, data protection or sanctions compliance.
• Experience managing external counsel across several countries.
Contracts and document review
• Review, redline and negotiate NDAs, partner and vendor agreements, banking and payment-provider contracts, and service agreements, in French and English.
• Draft from our templates and improve them: build a bilingual playbook of standard positions, fallback clauses and red lines.
• Translate legal and regulatory documents between French and English accurately enough to sign or submit.
• Give the business a clear answer on each document: sign, sign with these changes, or do not sign, and why.
Regulatory and compliance
• Prepare and review licence applications, regulator correspondence and responses to information requests in Francophone markets (for example BCEAO in the UEMOA zone, and BEAC and COBAC in the CEMAC zone).
