Lead Data Engineer, Data Imports and Migrations

Role summary:
You will help move healthcare data into athenahealth systems with accuracy, consistency, and care. In this remote-US role, you will design and support data import, migration, transformation, and export processes that help practices transition from legacy EHR environments to athenahealth. You will work across sales, product, and operational teams to support reliable data movement, issue resolution, and validation. This position is based remotely in the United States.

Team summary:
The Data Imports and Migrations team supports customer implementations and data transition efforts by building repeatable, scalable processes for bringing in and transforming legacy healthcare data. The team works closely with product, implementation, engineering, and operations partners to define migration approaches, create ETL routines, validate data quality, and support export activities. The work is focused on delivering dependable data movement that helps customers get started on athenahealth with greater confidence and less disruption.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop and support ETL workflows that extract, transform, and load data from legacy EHRs systems into athenahealth environments.

  • Write and maintain functions used for data analysis, validation, reconciliation, and troubleshooting.

  • Build Python and SQL scripts and utilities that support import, migration, and automation activities.

  • Partner with internal teams to define source-to-target mappings, business rules, and migration requirements.

  • Review inbound and outbound data to identify gaps, defects, and transformation issues.

  • Support interoperability workflows using HL7 and FHIR standards.

  • Perform EHI export-related tasks and validate output for completeness and accuracy.

  • Investigate data issues, document findings, and help drive resolution across teams.

  • Maintain technical documentation for processes, dependencies, and validation steps.

  • Use AI to improve productivity in data analysis and development tasks, while applying human review to confirm accuracy and align outputs to the needs of the work.

Additional Job Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to process improvements that increase the scalability and repeatability of migration work.

  • Support testing and validation activities for data import and export processes.

  • Participate in project planning, status updates, and issue triage as needed.

  • Help maintain reusable tools, templates, and standards for migration work.

  • Assist with documentation updates and knowledge sharing across the team.

  • Support coordination across product, implementation, operations, and engineering partners.

  • Help identify opportunities to reduce manual effort through automation and better process design.

Expected Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 5+ years of experience in data engineering, ETL, data migration, or a related technical discipline.

  • Experience working with ETL, SQL, and Python.

  • Experience supporting data imports, conversions, migrations, or similar data movement work.

  • Familiarity with HL7 and FHIR interoperability standards.

  • Experience with EHI Export or related healthcare data export workflows preferred.

  • Experience working with healthcare data, healthcare technology, or implementation-focused teams preferred.

  • Ability to analyze data, identify issues, and document technical results clearly.

  • Ability to work effectively in a remote, cross-functional environment.

  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills

 

Expected Compensation

The base salary range shown reflects the full range for this role from minimum to maximum. At athenahealth, base pay depends on multiple factors, including job-related experience, relevant knowledge and skills, how your qualifications compare to others in similar roles, and geographical market rates.  Base pay is only one part of our competitive Total Rewards package - depending on role eligibility, we offer both short and long-term incentives by way of an annual discretionary bonus plan, variable compensation plan, and equity plans.
