We're looking for a highly experienced transport professional to join us Lead Auditor and Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor. This is a specialist role responsible for providing independent regulatory oversight, ensuring Serco continues to meet the highest standards of transport compliance, governance and operational assurance across the UK.

Working closely with the Head of Operator and Legislative Licensing, you'll provide expert advice to senior leaders, oversee regulatory compliance programmes and help protect the business by ensuring our transport operations consistently meet statutory obligations and industry best practice.

 

What you'll be doing

 

This is a varied and influential role where you'll combine strategic oversight with hands-on regulatory assurance. You'll work across multiple contracts and operating centres, building strong relationships with operational leaders while maintaining an independent governance perspective.

 

Key responsibilities include:

 

  • Acting as Serco's appointed Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor (DGSA), leading compliance activities, producing statutory annual reports and providing expert advice across the business.
  • Conducting Operator Licence audits across Serco operating centres, identifying risks and ensuring corrective actions are implemented.
  • Monitoring compliance through the company risk management system, analysing trends and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Providing expert guidance on UK and EU transport legislation, Operator Licensing requirements and transport governance.
  • Supporting the development, review and implementation of transport policies, governance frameworks and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Delivering Dangerous Goods and transport compliance training to operational teams, Transport Managers and leaders across the business.
  • Mentoring Transport Managers to ensure ongoing legislative compliance and best practice.
  • Representing Serco at industry and professional forums, ensuring the business remains ahead of legislative and regulatory changes.
  • Supporting senior leadership by providing strategic advice on transport legislation, governance and transport-related health and safety matters.

 

What you'll bring

 

You'll be an experienced transport compliance professional with significant knowledge of Operator Licensing, transport legislation and Dangerous Goods regulations. You'll be confident influencing senior stakeholders, conducting independent audits and providing pragmatic advice that supports safe and compliant operations.

 

We're looking for someone with:

 

Essential qualifications

  • National Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) in Large Goods Vehicles.
  • National Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) in Public Service Vehicles.
  • Current Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor (DGSA) Certificate.

 

Essential experience and knowledge

  • Extensive knowledge of UK road transport legislation, Operator Licensing and Dangerous Goods regulations.
  • Experience undertaking compliance audits and regulatory assurance activities.
  • Strong understanding of transport governance, risk management and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience working with government agencies, regulators and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret legislation and apply it within complex operational environments.
  • Strong communication and influencing skills, with the confidence to advise senior leaders and challenge where necessary.
  • Experience developing policies, procedures and compliance frameworks.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, fleet management systems and risk management systems.
  • A passion for continuous improvement, innovation and raising compliance standards.

 

Desirable:

  • Working towards qualifications in Dangerous Goods by Sea and Dangerous Goods by Air.
