Develop structural steel connection designs and miscellaneous steel elements using specialized engineering software while meeting project specifications. Support project estimating by reviewing drawings and maintaining accurate technical documentation for licensed U.S. engineers.
This is a remote position.
Our client is looking for a Junior Structural Designer to join their growing engineering team and support structural steel design projects across the United States.
Our client is an established U.S.-based structural engineering firm specializing in steel connection design and engineering solutions for fabricators and detailers. Due to increasing project demand, they are expanding their team to support additional projects while maintaining high standards of technical accuracy and quality.
This opportunity is ideal for a detail-oriented professional with a background in engineering, architecture, construction, or technical drafting who is eager to develop specialized structural design skills. The selected candidate will receive hands-on training, collaborate directly with experienced U.S. engineers, and contribute to real construction projects.
Develop structural steel connection designs, including shear, moment, and bracing connections, using specialized engineering software while meeting project specifications and applicable codes.
Design miscellaneous steel elements such as stairs, ladders, guardrails, handrails, and related components.
Read and interpret structural construction drawings, steel detailing plans, and technical models provided by clients.
Enter engineering information into design software and adjust bolt sizes, plate thicknesses, weld dimensions, and connection geometry to meet technical requirements.
Prepare structural calculation packages for review and approval by licensed U.S. engineers.
Support project estimating by reviewing drawings, counting structural members, identifying connection types, and entering information into an internal estimating tool.
Recognize unusual connection details, custom steel elements, or requirements outside standard project specifications and request engineering guidance when necessary.
Maintain accurate technical documentation and ensure calculations and designs meet established quality standards.
Collaborate with engineers and project stakeholders to complete assignments within established deadlines, communicating potential delays proactively.
Maintain strict confidentiality regarding client drawings, proprietary engineering methods, and project documentation.
Participate in ongoing technical training and apply feedback to improve design accuracy and efficiency.
Gradually assume greater responsibility for assigned projects and communicate directly with U.S. steel fabricators and detailers as experience develops.
Work Distribution: Approximately 80% structural steel connection and miscellaneous steel design and 20% project estimating and quoting.
Ability to interpret construction drawings or demonstrate a strong aptitude for learning technical drawing interpretation.
Strong computer skills and ability to learn specialized engineering software quickly.
Professional English proficiency (B2 or higher), both written and spoken.
Ability to communicate effectively with U.S.-based colleagues through video calls, email, and collaborative platforms.
Excellent attention to detail and commitment to technical accuracy.
Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
Reliability, punctuality, and ability to follow through on assigned responsibilities.
Willingness to receive feedback and follow technical guidance from licensed engineers.
Ability to perform repetitive, detail-oriented technical tasks while maintaining consistency and quality.
Strong time management skills and ability to work under occasional tight deadlines.
Availability to work during core Eastern Time collaboration hours and occasional paid overtime.
Interest in building a long-term career in structural design.

A 27-inch monitor.
Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to maintain connectivity during brief power interruptions.
Stable, high-speed internet connection and backup connectivity, such as a mobile hotspot.
Functional webcam and headset.
Technical degree in engineering, architecture, industrial design, construction technology, or a related field is preferred.
Educational background in civil or structural engineering is an advantage.
Previous experience or academic exposure to structural drafting, steel detailing, construction documentation, or engineering design is beneficial.
Familiarity with AutoCAD, Tekla Structures, SDS2, Revit, Bluebeam, or similar technical software is preferred but not mandatory.
Understanding of structural drawings, steel connections, or construction estimating is a plus.
Ability and motivation to learn specialized engineering software and internal design procedures.
Previous professional experience in structural steel connection design is not mandatory. Training will be provided.
