ROLE PURPOSE
The Senior Accountant is responsible for supporting accurate, timely, and compliant financial reporting through reconciliations, adjusting entries, financial analysis, and internal and external reporting. This role provides guidance on accounting treatment, supports budgeting, forecasting, and planning activities, and contributes to strong internal controls, audit readiness, and continuous improvement across finance processes. The Senior Accountant also supports evolving organizational needs by mentoring finance staff, collaborating across teams, and helping implement practical processes, system, automation, and reporting improvements.
STATUS AND CLASSIFICATION
Exempt. This position is open to applicants of all genders.
HOURS
40 hours per week; Monday to Friday, 0830-1630.
This position requires the ability to work flexible hours based on operational needs.
REPORTING AND WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
- Reports and is accountable to the Senior Manager of Finance or their designate
- Participates as a member of the Connective Common Services and Program Teams
- Liaises with staff and volunteers of community, funders and government agencies as required
- Liaises with the staff of Connective as necessary
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Month-End, Quarter-End, and Year-End Reconciliations and Adjusting Entries
- Prepares and reviews month-end, quarter-end, and year-end general ledger account reconciliations, rent processing and reconciliation, timely bank reconciliations, supporting schedules, and deferred revenue booking and recognition. Prepares adjusting journal entries to ensure financial records are complete, accurate, properly supported, and compliant with accounting standards and internal control requirements
Accounting Treatment and Standards
- Provides guidance on accounting treatment and applicable accounting standards when required, supporting consistent, well-documented, and compliant financial reporting decisions
Financial Analysis and Variance Reporting
- Performs financial analysis, including evaluation of the company’s financial health by analyzing key financial data, identifying trends, and providing insight to support decision-making and planning by participating in regular forecasting, budgeting, and other activities
Financial Reporting for Internal and External Stakeholders
- Prepares accurate, timely, and meaningful financial reports for internal staff, funders, and other stakeholders, ensuring reporting requirements are met, and financial information is presented clearly within a budgeted environment
Budgeting, Forecasting, and Planning Activities
- Supports the development of annual budgets, forecasts, and planning tools by gathering and analyzing financial data, preparing supporting schedules, and contributing to realistic and effective financial projections
Internal Controls and Supports Finance Transformation, Automation, and Continuous Improvement
- Identifies and supports opportunities to strengthen internal controls, standardize and improve finance processes, and enhance audit readiness through system enhancements, automation, AI-enabled tools, and more efficient ways of working. Adapts to change, contributes to process redesign, and helps implement practical, scalable solutions that improve accuracy, efficiency, and team effectiveness
Mentorship and Cross-Departmental Support
- Mentors and supports finance staff as needed, shares technical and accounting knowledge, and collaborates with teams across the organization to resolve issues, support new processes, and build effective working relationships in an evolving work environment
Additional Finance Responsibilities as Organizational Needs Evolve
- Performs other task-specific finance duties as required to support organizational priorities, reporting needs, system changes, service agreements, and future process enhancements. This role is not specific to a single entity or program
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Function independently, while remaining a crucial member of the finance and common services teams
- Adhere to Connective policies and procedures
- Be available to work flexible hours during peak or exceptional periods, such as month-end, quarter-end, year-end, audits, reporting deadlines, system implementations, or urgent departmental needs. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required with advance notice where possible
- Primarily remote work
EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
- University degree or diploma in accounting
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation considered an asset
- 4+ years of experience in full cycle accounting
- Knowledge of accounts standards for not-for-profit organizations, internal controls, and financial reporting
- Familiarity with accounting systems
- High proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel
- Willingness to learn new skills and contribute to process improvements
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Excellent communication skills (listening, verbal, and written)

- Ability to successfully complete a Vulnerable Persons Criminal Records Check
- Ability to successfully pass a reference check
COMPENSATION
The salary range for this position is $71,300 to $89,100. Annual salary will be negotiated based on experience and qualifications. This role will also be eligible for Connective's comprehensive benefits package.
