Position Summary
The FP&A Principal will serve as the owner of SJI’s total Company Net Asset Value (NAV) model and the related reporting process. This role is accountable for maintaining the integrity, accuracy, and transparency of the NAV model; leading quarterly refreshes and ad hoc scenario analyses; and translating operating, regulatory, commodity, financing, and growth assumptions into clear valuation impacts for senior leadership, the Board, and the Company’s private equity sponsor.
The position will partner closely with Treasury, Accounting, Regulatory, Business Development, Operations, and other cross-functional stakeholders to ensure the NAV model reflects the most current financial plan, capital structure, regulatory outlook, commodity assumptions, and strategic growth pipeline. The ideal candidate combines strong valuation and modeling expertise with the ability to synthesize complex analyses into concise, executive-ready insights and recommendations.
Essential Functions:
- Own, maintain, and enhance SJI’s total Company NAV model, including model architecture, assumptions, source support, version control, scenario management, and outputs used for leadership and sponsor reporting.
- Lead the quarterly NAV refresh process, coordinating inputs cross functionally across the organization to ensure model assumptions align with the latest forecast, long-range plan, business updates, and market conditions.
- Prepare quarterly strategic package reporting for the private equity sponsor and senior leadership, including NAV bridge analysis, key valuation drivers, changes versus prior quarter, sensitivity ranges, and clear commentary on risks and opportunities.
- Develop ad hoc NAV and valuation analysis to support strategic decisions, including accretion / dilution analysis for growth opportunities, acquisitions, joint ventures, organic projects, and other investment alternatives.
- Analyze the valuation and financial impact of capital structure changes, financing alternatives, leverage levels, distributions, debt refinancing, equity contributions, and other balance sheet actions.
- Evaluate changes in the regulatory landscape and translate potential impacts into NAV, cash flow, return, and risk outcomes, including rate case assumptions, allowed returns, capital structure, recovery mechanisms, and timing considerations.
- Model commodity and macroeconomic sensitivities relevant to SJI’s businesses, including commodity price changes, volumes, margins, inflation, interest rates, and other market variables that may affect cash flows, valuation, or strategic alternatives.
- Build and maintain executive-ready dashboards, slides, and supporting schedules that clearly explain valuation movement, assumptions, sensitivities, and strategic implications for management, the Board, and the private equity sponsor.
- Partner with Business Development and operating teams to assess growth opportunities using DCF, ROI, NPV, IRR, accretion / dilution, and scenario analysis; provide recommendations on financial attractiveness, risks, and value creation potential.
- Monitor industry trends, peer valuation benchmarks, economic developments, capital markets activity, and regulatory changes to strengthen the accuracy and relevance of the NAV model and related strategic analysis.
- Support risk identification and mitigation by assessing downside cases, sensitivity ranges, key model dependencies, and potential valuation impacts across SJI’s portfolio and strategic growth pipeline.
Preferred Skills:
- Advanced financial modeling and valuation expertise, including DCF, NAV, ROI, NPV, IRR, accretion / dilution, scenario analysis, and sensitivity modeling.
- Experience owning complex corporate or asset-level valuation models, preferably in utilities, energy infrastructure, renewables, RNG, investment banking, private equity, or strategic finance.
- Strong understanding of utility regulation, capital structure, financing strategy, commodity exposure, and the financial drivers of energy infrastructure businesses.
- Ability to convert complex valuation analysis into concise, executive-ready narratives, presentations, and recommendations for senior leadership, Board, and sponsor audiences.
- Advanced Excel and PowerPoint skills required; experience with long-range planning, forecast models, BI tools, or data visualization platforms is preferred.
- Advanced degree or certification such as CFA, MBA, CPA, or other relevant credential is highly advantageous.
