ABOUT NASDA

NASDA is a nonpartisan, nonprofit association that represents the elected and appointed commissioners, secretaries, and directors of the departments of agriculture in all fifty states and four U.S. territories. Founded in 1916, our mission is to grow and enhance American agriculture through policies, partnerships, and public engagement.

Since 1972, NASDA has employed enumerators to collect agricultural data on behalf of the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). In order to achieve our goals, we need employees who are as passionate about agriculture and willing to put in the hard work. A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A FIELD ENUMERATOR

You will play an important role in supporting agriculture by collecting accurate, reliable, and confidential data to help inform decision-making by agricultural leaders and USDA programs. 

No two days look exactly the same. This role offers variety, independence, and community engagement.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Interviewing farmers, ranchers, and agricultural businesses by phone or in person
  • Conducting crop counts in designated fields (not applicable to all positions)
  • Recording survey responses, mileage, expenses, and hours worked using an iPad
  • Maintaining clear, complete, and timely records
  • Representing NASDA professionally and positively in all interactions

 

QUALIFICATIONS FOR A FIELD ENUMERATOR

  • A valid driver's license and personal vehicle for in-person interviews, field surveys and crop counts. Milage is reimbursed
  • A phone. A small stipend is provided for phone work
  • Self-motivation and a strong sense of responsibility
  • Strong communication skills and a professional, friendly demeanor
  • Comfort speaking with people by phone and in person
  • Basic familiarity with technology (iPads, data entry, email)
  • Good time management and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
  • An interest in agriculture, food systems, sustainability, or rural communities
  • Access to a reliable vehicle


SCHEDULE & FLEXIBILITY

  • Hours are highly flexible
  • Evening and/or weekend work occasionally required
  • Workload may fluctuate depending on agricultural seasons
  • With advance coordination, you may pick up or drop hours
