This is a part-time position (25-30 hours per week), Monday-Friday.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Export Auditor is responsible for reviewing, verifying, and monitoring international export documentation to support regulatory compliance, shipment accuracy, and audit readiness. This role uses internal shipping records, customs documentation, system data, and established procedures to identify documentation gaps, reduce operational risk, and help ensure compliance with applicable global trade requirements. The Export Auditor maintains a daily audit listing that tracks file status, required corrections, follow-up actions, and outstanding items through audit closure.


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plan and perform routine internal export audits using established audit procedures and reporting tools.
  • Review daily audit reports to confirm export files are compliant prior to port departure.
  • Verify the accuracy and completeness of key export documents, including SLIs, commercial invoices, EIN information, ports of departure, cargo descriptions, and shipment records.
  • Review Schedule B / HS tariff codes, customs valuation, country of origin information, and other applicable export data elements.
  • Identify documentation errors, compliance risks, potential rule violations, missing information, and process gaps.
  • Escalate repeated errors, high-risk issues, potential regulatory concerns, or unresolved audit items to management and Compliance as appropriate.
  • Provide clear, current, and actionable audit status reports for the manager.
  • Conduct a methodical review of shipment data and understand how data fields interact across export documents and systems.
  • Identify discrepancies between documents, including clerical errors, value mismatches, missing documentation, and inconsistent shipment details.
  • Communicate correction requests clearly to coordinators by email, including examples or supporting details when needed.
  • Follow up on open audit items within established timelines, typically within five business days, and continue follow-up until resolution.
  • Maintain a dated monthly tracking report to monitor corrections, aging items, repeated errors, and long-standing open issues.
  • Provide one-on-one coaching and practical examples to improve coordinator accuracy and reduce repeat audit findings.
  • Support Team Leads and Supervisors with new-hire training by explaining documentation standards and the requirements for a clean audit file.
  • Participate in team meetings to stay connected with coordinators, share audit trends, and reinforce compliance expectations.
  • Share best practices, operational expertise, and process improvement recommendations to strengthen compliance knowledge across the team.
  • Partner with the Compliance Department to stay current on customs regulations, export requirements, and audit expectations.
  • Attend compliance training sessions and apply regulatory updates to audit procedures as appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned


BENCHMARKS FOR MEASURING SUCCESS:

  • Audit reports and tracking files are maintained accurately, updated consistently, and used to support timely audit closure.
  • Export files are reviewed within required timeline, with priority given to items that may affect shipment compliance or port departure.
  • Repeat documentation errors are identified, communicated, and reduced through coaching, feedback, and trend reporting.
  • Open audit items and corrective actions are followed through to resolution within established expectations.
  • The auditor serves as a reliable resource for documentation questions, compliance expectations, and “how to” guidance.


SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:

Technical Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of air and ocean export operations, documentation, and freight forwarding processes.
  • Working knowledge of export documentation requirements, including commercial invoices, SLIs, shipment records, Schedule B / HS classification, country of origin, valuation, and port information.
  • Familiarity with export compliance controls such as restricted party screening, TSA requirements, dangerous goods documentation, carnets, and other regulatory programs, as applicable.
  • Proficiency in CargoWise or similar freight forwarding systems.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, including Excel reporting, tracking, and data review.


Business Skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain findings clearly and constructively.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, open audit items, and follow-up timelines.
  • High attention to detail, accountability, and ownership of audit accuracy.
  • Ability to adapt procedures based on changes to customs regulations, company policy, or compliance guidance.
  • Ability to identify compliance trends, repeat findings, and root causes that may require corrective action or additional training.
  • Continuous improvement mindset with the ability to recommend practical process improvements.
  • Strong judgment, professionalism, and discretion when handling complex or sensitive compliance matters.



Required Qualifications:

  • Strong communication, problem-solving, organizational, and follow-through skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel.
  • Ability to manage complex discrepancies and follow through until audit items are resolved.
  • High attention to detail and ability to review multi-document shipment files accurately.



Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of Freight Forwarding experience
  • Prior experience in export operations, freight forwarding, audit, or trade compliance.
  • Familiarity with CargoWise or similar forwarding systems and export documentation requirements.



OFFICE / WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position operates in a professional office environment (and/or remotely from a home office) with a quiet to moderate noise level and routinely requires the use of standard office equipment such computers, photocopying machines and storage/filing cabinets. This is a largely sedentary role, however, lifting items under 25 pounds as well as the ability to bend, stand and walk short distances may be required.
