Job Description

The Global Automation Project Engineer supporting the Advanced Automation Development Initiative is responsible for leading the design, development, and deployment of innovative automation capabilities that support the enterprise vision for the Service Centre of the Future. This role fosters cross-functional collaboration, evaluates and integrates emerging technologies, and delivers scalable automation developments that advance touchless repair, enhance operational efficiency, and promote long-term manufacturing sustainability.

Key Responsibilities May Include:

• Develop and manage large-scale capital engineering projects for automation, IoT and continuous improvement solutions, ensuring alignment with long-term business goals and objectives.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Operations, Health & Safety, Finance, Quality) and external suppliers to drive project success, managing stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
• Lead the preparation of Capex documents, including cost estimates, project justifications, equipment layouts, and technical specifications, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget.
• Manage equipment installation and commissioning, including contractor supervision, safety compliance, and ensuring adherence to all environmental regulations and legislative requirements.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives aimed at reducing Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) and increasing operational efficiency through the adoption of advanced technologies like AI, robotics, and digital twin models.
• Ensure the development and delivery of proper training programs and operational documentation (as-built drawings, manuals, spare parts lists) to ensure seamless handover to operational teams.
• Maintain strict financial control over capital projects, accurately forecasting expenditures, managing budgets, and ensuring fiduciary compliance throughout project execution.
• Champion Zero Harm and environmental standards, ensuring projects meet the highest safety requirements and adhere to regulatory standards throughout the project lifecycle.

Other Responsibilities Include:

• Support and manage large-scale capital engineering projects for advanced automation developments and automation capability developments, ensuring alignment with the Service Centre of the future enterprise program.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Global Automation, Regional Engineering, Operations, Health & Safety, Finance, Quality) and external partners to drive project success, managing stakeholders throughout the development project lifecycle.
• Support the preparation of CHEP Technology Development Capex documents, including cost estimates, project details, and technical specifications, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget.
• Manage equipment developments and all Global Automation technical Centre (GATC) test schedules, including partner supervision, safety compliance, and ensuring adherence to all environmental regulations and legislative requirements.
• Successfully advance assigned automation technologies from concept through proof-of-concept, pilot, and deployment readiness in alignment with the Service Center of the Future roadmap.
• Deliver approved automation development projects on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with defined technical, quality, and safety requirements.
• Establish and maintain effective collaboration with global cross-functional stakeholders, ensuring successful technology adoption, knowledge transfer, and achievement of strategic automation objectives.
• Ensure the development and delivery of required documentation (as-built drawings, manuals, spare parts lists) to work directly with the global technical learning team to establish proper training materials for all advanced automation developments.

 

What You’ll Bring:

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering,
• Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Robotics Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
• 5+ years of experience in automation, manufacturing engineering, robotics, controls engineering, or technology development.
• Experience with Industry 4.0 technologies, Industrial IoT, AI/ML applications, digital twins, autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), or smart factory initiatives.
• Demonstrated experience leading complex engineering or automation projects from concept through implementation.
• Experience evaluating, developing, and integrating emerging technologies within a manufacturing or service operations environment.
• Knowledge of industrial automation systems, including robotics, machine vision, PLCs, motion control, and automated material handling technologies.
• Strong project management skills with the ability to manage scope, schedule, budget, risks, and stakeholder expectations.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to develop innovative solutions to complex development challenges.

 

Desirable Skills

• Master’s degree in engineering, Robotics,
• Automation, or related technical field.
• Design for Six Sigma Black Belt
• Project Management Professional (PMP)
• Spanish, French, and/or German languages desirable
