Engineering Manager, Guest & Host (Host Listings & Quality)

The Community You Will Join 

As the Engineering Manager for the Insights Platform on Airbnb's Guest & Host team, you'll lead the system that decides what every host is told about improving their earnings, quality and listings. It delivers that guidance across email, push notifications, in-product experiences, dashboards and conversational agents. You'll lead a team of senior and staff engineers across data engineering, machine learning and backend through the platform's next evolution: from batch to real-time and from rules-based to model-driven, with AI-assisted insight creation and personalization at its core. The team partners closely with product, design and data science, and with teams across Airbnb that rely on the platform to reach hosts.  

A Typical Day:

• Work closely with other senior leaders to define and drive long-term technical strategy and architecture that enables the company’s future vision
• Partner with senior Product, Design and Data Science leaders to set platform strategy, including how insights are ranked, personalized and measured.
• Lead the team to build reliable, performant and scalable systems for insight creation, personalization, cross-channel delivery and measurement.
• Provide critical input in team roadmap and technical direction.
• Influence and collaborate with stakeholders to adopt team goals and roadmaps.
• Identify areas of improvement and drive best practices
• Hands-on development, including design and code reviews
• Mentor, guide, and support the career growth of individual contributors

Your Expertise:

• 10+ years of relevant experience in the tech industry; 5+ years of experience in an Engineering Manager role, with ownership responsibility over large-scale software systems.
• Strong product judgment, exercised through data. You understand the data behind user behavior and outcomes, spot patterns, and turn them into product and platform decisions.
• Track record of setting and holding a multi-year technical direction on a live, business-critical platform. This includes leading a major re-architecture or transition, such as batch to real-time or rules-based to model-driven, while continuing to deliver.
• Depth in backend, data or ML platforms, with the ability to understand and represent data engineering, machine learning and backend engineering. Experience with distributed systems, data pipelines, and real-time or streaming architectures.   
• Experience applying ML and LLMs in production to personalize or rank what users see, and using experimentation and measurement to prove impact.
• Experience managing and growing senior and staff engineers, and creating an environment where they own initiatives end to end.
• Strong communication and influence with technical and non-technical partners. Demonstrated ability to set shared standards and align multiple teams and organizations on a common platform approach.
• A proven track record of fostering a culture of Diversity and Belonging, within the organization and across the tech community

This position is US - Remote Eligible. The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites, as agreed to with your manager.
