Director, Policy

WHAT IS THE ROLE 

The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools, the leading national nonprofit dedicated to advancing the charter school movement, is seeking a talented and motivated professional to join its team. 

The Director, Policy reports to the Senior Director, Policy and will drive policy and advocacy activities designed to expand access to charter school federal funding sources as well as increase support of charter schools more broadly at the federal level, serving as a central voice for the organization on federal policy priorities.  

WHAT YOU'LL DO  

• Regulatory Engagement: Manage the organization’s regulatory engagement process, including tracking and analyzing regulatory proposals governing key programs impacting charter schools and develop, with broad stakeholder input, comments on behalf of the charter school community.   

• Programmatic Development: Develop, manage, and present content related to the organization’s legislative and regulatory agenda, including the development of high-quality programming for the National Charter Schools Conference and other stakeholder meetings. 

• Policy Analysis and Development: Develop and advance a robust federal regulatory agenda across several agencies (including but not limited to the U.S. Dept of Ed, Labor, Agriculture, and Treasury) with creative, thorough, and thoughtful policy analysis and development.  

• Stakeholder Engagement: Support relationship development and management of key policy partners and Administration officials to collect input and promote alignment on key policy priorities across the charter school community.  

• Advocacy: Develop and maintain high-quality collateral and talking points on important policy issues facing the sector, equipping the Government Relations team to advance the organization’s priorities.  

• Relationship Building: Build and steward strong relationships with key stakeholders across the charter school community at the federal level, positioning the National Alliance as a trusted partner on federal charter school policy. 

• Represent The National Alliance: Regularly attend and report out on seminars and briefings that pertain to charter schools, school choice, and education reform to support partnership development and growth. 

WHO YOU ARE 

• You are committed to education reform, the charter school movement, and the mission of the National Alliance. 

• You have a bachelor’s degree and those best suited for this role also have a master’s degree. 

• You have at least six (6) years of relevant work experience. 

• You have the ability to meet time-sensitive deadlines and manage multiple tasks in an efficient manner. 

• You have excellent writing, communication, and interpersonal skills. 

• You take pride in the work you produce and are detail oriented. 

• You are able to set priorities, develop a work schedule, monitor progress towards goals, enjoy tracking all of the details and data of the team and projects and have a high level of personal responsibility. 

• You enjoy being a team player and also have an entrepreneurial spirit.  

• You work cooperatively and effectively with others – setting goals, resolving problems, and making decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness. 

• You have built partnerships with local leaders and organizations whose mission coordinate with your organization. 

• You have a tremendous familiarity and comfort with all things Microsoft Office, and using Excel and managing a database system is an exciting responsibility for you. 

• You are ideally in the Washington, D.C. area.  

WHAT WE OFFER 

The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools offers a sector-leading salary and benefits package. We cover 100% of an employee’s medical, dental, and vision premiums, and 50% for spouses and dependents, including an HRA to cover 100% of in-network medical deductibles. We also offer: 

• 403(b) retirement account with up to a 6% match after 90 days of employment 

• Automatic life insurance coverage, short- and long-term disability coverage, and FSA 

• 12 weeks of fully paid parental leave 

• 25 PTO days annually, plus every federal holiday and a week off at year-end 

• Monthly reimbursement for internet and cellular service, plus a $500 home office setup stipend in your first 90 days 

The anticipated starting salary range for this role is $85,000-110,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
