Digital Background Artist - WFS

Summary/objective:

The Wingfeather Saga Animated Series at Angel Studios is looking for a skilled concept artist/painter to join our established team as a digital Background Artist. As we begin work on Season 5 of this award-winning show we are excited to add another valued artist to the crew. We value real artists and the beauty that they contribute to each frame.

Candidate will create concept art and environment sketches over rough layout, ultimately completing finished, screen-ready, digital background paintings in a defined painterly style. Visually bringing the fantasy world of The Wingfeather Saga to life, with all of its whimsical locations. The Background artist's paintings will be placed into a multi-plane system and used as the rich backdrop to this epic fantasy series.

Essential functions

• Design and paint backgrounds under the direction of the Art Director
• Generate rough concepts to explore architecture and locations within the style of the show
• Create layered digital paintings to be used as finished backgrounds
• When requested, create and present innovative ideas to enhance visual concepts and designs
• Knowledge of, and ability to, integrate fundamental painting techniques and tools into artwork
• Superior eye and ability to translate a thorough understanding of perspective, composition, color and lighting into designs and/or paintings
• Willingness to take feedback and rework material while maintaining a fresh perspective
• Communicate progress of work to appropriate production staff and ensure all deadlines are met
• Ability to take ownership and flourish in an important role
• Must attend and contribute to regularly scheduled staff meetings.
• Proficiency in speaking, reading and writing in the English language required.  Additional language proficiency is a plus.

• Must demonstrate proficiency in style of show
• Strong knowledge of color theory and lighting
• Strong knowledge of Photoshop or other equivalent digital painting software
• Strong time-management skills and experience working with deadlines
• Self-motivated, good communication skills, and a great team player
• An exceptional listener with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency with and Google Workspace.
• Detail-oriented perspective and able to pick up on overlooked details.
• Able to maintain confidentiality of information.
• Must be able to manage multiple assignments, set priorities, and adapt to changing conditions.
• Resourceful and able to problem-solve and manage tasks with ambiguity. 
• Willing to perform an array of tasks both in and out of the office.
• Can take feedback to tasks and assignments positively and create better solutions.
• A quick study, able to pick up new skills and learn how to use new programs.
• Must participate in setting and achieving regularly scheduled and outlined objectives. 
• Recognize when you're wrong, learning from your mistakes and moving past them.
• Ability to take individual ownership, execute with high energy, share context, insist on candor with positive intent.

Work environment - When in the main office, expect a comfortable, air-conditioned work environment. Team members are issued their own desks, but the office is an open, shared space and can be fast-paced and occasionally noisy.

Physical demands - Ability to sit at desk and use computer for prolonged periods of time

Position type and expected hours of work - Temporary.

Preferred education and experience

• 4 years of professional experience as a concept artist or background painter
• BA/BS or equivalent work experience highly desired
• Knowledge and experience working on a CG or 2D series
• Ability to work in Unreal Engine or similar a plus
• Tennessee state resident a plus. Remote work available
