AI Summary

The Data Scientist III will collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop statistical and machine learning models for utility industry applications. Responsibilities include managing data science pipelines, conducting code reviews, and translating complex analytical insights into actionable strategies for clients.

At E Source, we help utilities make sense of complexity in a rapidly changing landscape, and we’re looking for a Data Scientist III to help shape how that impact shows up in the world.

E Source is a research, data/analytics, and technology focused professional services firm focused exclusively on the utility industry in the US and Canada. We help utilities target and serve their customers more effectively, enhance and optimize their grid, and leverage operating best practices and technologies to manage their business more effectively. Headquartered in Texas, we have 450+ employees across the US and Canada. Learn more at www.esource.com

As a Data Scientist III, you’ll join E Source’s team, collaborating on data science projects with utility domain experts, software engineers, and machine learning engineers. You’ll work on projects like customer energy usage modeling across time and weather conditions, detecting usage of grid-impacting customer end uses, and estimating the impacts of utility-managed programs and services, with models built for integration into the production software that serves our utility clients. This role is ideal for a self-starter who thrives in team-based, collaborative projects from conception to end-user handoff, and who can simplify complex analyses into concepts that are clear to management and operations stakeholders.

In this role, you will:

  • Contribute to translating a scope of work into technical tasks for project team assignments using Jira issues

  • Explore data and evaluate its sufficiency to perform data science tasks

  • Creatively distill insights from data exploration and modeling to make our work products meaningful and actionable for clients

  • Develop statistical and machine learning models and validate model performance

  • Collaborate on the development and maintenance of data science pipelines for repeated execution

  • Manage code repositories and conduct code reviews

  • Communicate with clients, internal or external, throughout the data science project lifecycle

  • Identify data sources that can facilitate data science solutions to utility industry problems

You’re likely a great fit if you:

  • Are a self-starter who thrives in team-based, collaborative projects from conception to end-user handoff

  • Provide an excellent customer experience throughout a project’s lifecycle

  • Can simplify complex analyses into concepts that are clear to management and operations stakeholders

  • Communicate and present clearly and confidently

And even better if you:

  • Have experience using Databricks, particularly with PySpark

  • Have professional experience in the utility or energy sector

  • Are familiar with customer and distribution grid data models

  • Are familiar with cloud environments, specifically AWS and Azure

Experience and Skills to Qualify Include:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in a technical field such as statistics, economics, mathematics, or electrical engineering

  • Proficiency in R or Python (fluency in both preferred)

  • Experience applying data science methods to proof-of-concept and operational support projects in a professional environment

  • Strong understanding of a variety of statistical and machine learning model families.

    • Examples may include generalized linear models, time series approaches, penalized regression models, tree-based ensemble models, neural network models, and natural language processing techniques

At E Source, you’ll work alongside people who are thoughtful, curious, and deeply knowledgeable about utility and energy systems. We value clarity over jargon, substance over flash, and collaboration over ego. You’ll have the opportunity to grow your skills, contribute to meaningful work, and help shape a company that plays a real role in how the energy future unfolds.

What you can expect

  • Excellent insurance options, including medical, dental, and vision plans; company-paid life insurance; company-paid long- and short-term disability insurance; medical and dependent-care flexible spending plans, and paid parental leave.

  • A flexible time off (FTO) policy that provides paid time away from work, approved by your manager, while ensuring business needs, workload commitments, and appropriate coverage are maintained.

  • A 401(k) plan with a 3% employer match.

The budgeted salary for this position is $100,000–$137,000 USD + annual bonus. Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience.

This role will be 100% remote, with infrequent travel (generally 1–2 times per year).

Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the US or Canada. We’re unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of employment visas or Labour Market Impact Assessments (Cdn) at this time.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or status as a protected veteran.
