Position Overview

Within the Elanco US Pet Health Business Unit, the Customer Development Consulting Veterinarian (CDS Vet) serves as the core companion animal veterinary technical anchor and strategic partner for the Customer Development Specialist (CDS) inside sales organization. Operating similarly to field-based Regional Consulting Veterinarians (RCVs), this role drives technical excellence, scientific credibility, and commercial enablement with a dedicated focus on virtual engagement, digital channels, and inside sales collaboration.

The CDS Veterinarian delivers high-impact scientific education, product consultation, and clinical objection-handling directly to veterinary practices, corporate veterinary accounts, and inside sales teams via phone, video platforms, and virtual educational webinars.

Key Responsibilities

1. Commercial & Technical Partnership (Inside Sales Support)

  • Serve as the dedicated clinical and technical subject matter expert for the Customer Development Specialist (CDS) team across key therapeutic areas (parasiticides, therapeutics, vaccines, and pain management).
  • Partner with inside sales representatives on high-value outbound/inbound virtual customer interactions, delivering consultative technical support and overcoming clinical hurdles.
  • Provide agile, real-time technical answers and clinical context to empower inside sales reps to drive brand conversion and loyalty.

2. Virtual Customer Education & Engagement

  • Deliver engaging, high-impact virtual lunch-and-learns, CE webinars, staff training sessions, and product presentations to veterinary hospital staff, practice managers, and veterinarians.
  • Master virtual engagement tools and presentation techniques to create compelling, interactive digital learning environments.
  • Support pre-launch, launch, and post-launch technical campaigns for new and existing Elanco product lines within the inside sales footprint.

3. Medical Acumen & Training

  • Maintain an advanced level of technical proficiency and scientific literacy regarding Elanco products, competitor profiles, emerging veterinary trends, and peer-reviewed literature.
  • Partner with Pet Health Training Managers to design and deliver technical training modules that enhance the clinical acumen of inside sales specialists.
  • Uphold strict regulatory, medical, and ethical standards across all commercial interactions (with limited, process-directed triage for adverse event and product performance inquiries).

What You Need to Succeed (Minimum Qualifications)

  • Education: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM, VMD, or equivalent degree) from an AVMA-accredited veterinary program.
  • Licensure: Active, unencumbered veterinary license to practice in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Clinical Experience: Minimum of 5 years of clinical veterinary practice experience in companion animal or mixed animal practice (companion animal focus), or equivalent experience within animal health industry technical consulting.
  • Virtual Fluency: Proven experience communicating complex scientific/medical data effectively over phone, video conference platforms (Teams, Zoom), and virtual webinars.
  • Agility & Planning: Strong self-direction, time management, and organizational skills with the ability to manage high-volume daily virtual interactions with minimal supervision.

Preferred Qualifications & Differentiators

  • Consultative Influence: Demonstrated track record of partnering with commercial/sales teams to educate customers and influence prescribing behavior through scientific differentiation.
  • Digital Presentation Mastery: Exceptional verbal, written, and multimedia presentation skills, with proven ability to maintain audience engagement in remote/digital settings.

Working Conditions & Travel

  • Work Environment: Remote / home office with substantial daily virtual and telephone customer engagement.
  • Travel Requirements: Up to 10–15% domestic travel, including annual national sales conferences, key veterinary congresses (e.g., VMX, WVC), and select HQ meetings.
