The Role

The Director, Chief of Staff to the Chief Communications Officer (CCO) serves as a strategic partner and operational leader, enabling the Communications organization to execute against its highest priorities. This role works directly with the CCO to translate strategy into action, drive alignment across the key functions (Internal Communications, External Communications, Brand, Creative, Events, and Lumen Films) and ensure operational excellence across a complex, matrixed organization.

The ideal candidate brings a unique blend of communications expertise and business acumen, with experience in a communications role complemented by formal business training or equivalent strategic experience. This individual operates at the intersection of strategy, analytics, and execution, helping elevate Communications as a business-driven, performance-oriented function.

The Main Responsibilities

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the CCO, helping prioritize initiatives and align resources to business objectives
  • Translate enterprise strategy into actionable Communications priorities, roadmaps, and deliverables
  • Drive the Communication & Brand organization’s rhythm of business (staff meetings, business reviews, budget reviews, and planning cycles)
  • Lead and coordinate high-priority, cross-functional initiatives across Communications, Marketing, HR, Legal, and Product teams
  • Act as a central integration point to ensure alignment, clarity, and follow-through across multiple workstreams
  • Identify risks, dependencies, and opportunities, and proactively drive solutions
  • Partner with Communications leaders to ensure cohesive, consistent messaging across internal and external channels
  • Support communications planning, executing against clear timelines and ensuring alignment to broader business strategy
  • Drive operational rigor, process improvement, and governance to enhance organizational effectiveness
  • Support and lead strategic initiatives, including transformation programs, organizational changes, and key communications priorities
  • Bring structure, clarity, and execution discipline to complex, ambiguous initiatives

What We Look For in a Candidate

  • 8–12+ years of experience across Communications, Corporate Strategy, Operations, or Management Consulting
  • Background in Communications (internal, external, executive, or public affairs) with a strong understanding of the communications discipline
  • Demonstrated experience supporting senior executives in a Chief of Staff, Strategy, or Operations role
  • Proven ability to translate strategy into execution and manage multiple complex initiatives simultaneously
  • Strong analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving skills with an operational mindset
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and executive communication skills
  • Executive presence with the ability to influence and build trust across stakeholders
  • High attention to detail with the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment
  • Self-starter with strong ownership and accountability

Preferred Qualifications

  • Combination of communications experience and business education (e.g., MBA) or equivalent strategic/quantitative training
  • Experience working in highly matrixed, enterprise environments
  • Demonstrated ability to apply data, metrics, and business insights to drive decision-making
  • Experience supporting transformation, change management, or organizational initiatives
  • Prior experience managing small teams or leading through influence

Compensation

This information reflects the anticipated base salary range for this position based on current national data. Minimums and maximums may vary based on location. Individual pay is based on skills, experience and other relevant factors.

Location Based Pay Ranges

$152,066 - $202,755 in these states: AL  AR  AZ  FL  GA  IA  ID  IN  KS  KY  LA  ME  MO  MS  MT  ND  NE  NM  OH  OK  PA  SC  SD  TN  UT  VT  WI  WV  WY 
$159,670 - $212,893 in these states: CO  HI  MI  MN  NC  NH  NV  OR  RI 
$167,273 - $223,031 in these states: AK  CA  CT  DC  DE  IL  MA  MD  NJ  NY  TX  VA  WA
