Automation & Integration Engineer

Remote position, ideally located in New England

Want to make a real difference in the world—and enjoy doing it?

At Abode Energy Management (Abode), we care deeply about the work we do and the impact it has on our planet’s future. As proud members of 1% for the Planet, we back that care with action—donating at least 1% of our annual revenue to vetted environmental nonprofits. We’re a fast-growing energy efficiency program implementer in the Northeast, leading the way in electrification and heat pump adoption. Our team is fun, kind, passionate, and progressive—and we offer a competitive benefits package to match. That includes Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, and Disability Insurance, a matching 401(k), and fully paid Parental Leave. We also believe you should be able to balance your work and personal life, so we offer generous paid time off (about 37 days a year!) and reasonable flexibility in when and where you work. If you’re looking for meaningful work, caring coworkers, and a great company culture, come join us.

Summary/Objective

Abode runs utility and government energy programs across New England, and much of that work depends on automations that move information between the tools our teams and customers use: Calendly, JotForm, SharePoint, Airtable, and Salesforce. We are consolidating these automations onto n8n and adding AI steps built on Claude, so program staff spend less time on data entry and more time helping customers and contractors.

The Automation & Integration Engineer will own Abode's automation platform as we standardize on n8n: designing new workflows, modernizing existing ones, and keeping everything reliable and well documented.

Responsibilities

The Automation & Integration Engineer will report to the Senior Director of Product and work closely with our Salesforce administrator and program teams. This position will include some or all of the following responsibilities:

  • Designing, building, and maintaining n8n workflows for program intake, scheduling, surveys, contractor enrollment, quality assurance, and reporting
  • Modernizing existing automations onto n8n, consolidating where it makes sense, with test plans and rollback steps
  • Integrating Salesforce, JotForm, SharePoint and OneDrive (Microsoft Graph), Airtable, and Calendly through REST APIs, webhooks, and OAuth
  • Building AI-assisted steps with Claude, such as document extraction, classification, and summarization, including structured outputs, validation, human review of low-confidence results, and tracking usage costs
  • Setting and following standards for error handling, retries, scheduling, logging, and alerting, and resolving break-fix issues
  • Serving as primary owner of Abode's automations, with documentation and runbooks that let teammates provide backup coverage
  • Gathering requirements with program staff and turning them into workflows that are simple to maintain
  • Managing credentials, service accounts, and access scopes securely, in line with Abode's data security and AI use policies
  • Supporting data flows into our reporting stack (BigQuery and Sigma) as needed
  • Identifying new automation opportunities and helping prioritize them with the technology team

Qualifications

Required

  • 3 to 5 years building production automations or integrations between SaaS systems
  • Strong working knowledge of REST APIs, JSON, webhooks, and OAuth 2.0
  • Scripting experience in JavaScript or Python (for example, in n8n Code nodes or custom API calls)
  • API integration experience with Salesforce or Microsoft Graph/SharePoint
  • Habits of good error handling, logging, and written documentation
  • Ability to work directly with non-technical program staff and explain technical work clearly

Preferred

  • Production n8n experience is strongly preferred, as we are actively standardizing our automations on n8n. Deep experience with a comparable platform (Make, Zapier, Power Automate, Workato) will be considered.
  • Building LLM steps into workflows, ideally with Claude or the Anthropic API
  • Experience with both Salesforce and Microsoft Graph, plus JotForm, Calendly, or Airtable
  • Experience moving workflows between platforms (for example, from Power Automate or Zapier to n8n)
  • SQL or BigQuery
  • Interest in clean energy, energy efficiency, or utility programs

Compensation and Benefits

This is a full-time, exempt position with total compensation targeted between $100K and $120K, depending on relevant skills and experience.  The Automation Engineer will work most of the time out of their own home, with some travel as needed to work with other staff in Abode’s Burlington office and/or to attend events or meetings.  Abode offers its employees a competitive benefits package, including Medical, Dental, Vision, Life and Disability Insurance, a matching 401k, and fully paid Parental Leave. Employees have a flexible working schedule and generous paid time off (~37 paid days off, or ~15% of all weekdays).

To Apply

To apply, please visit https://abodeenergy.com/about-abode/careers-and-culture/ to submit a resume and cover letter. Please include a link to, or a short screen-recorded walkthrough (10 minutes or less) of, an automation you've built in any platform. Applications will not be considered without a cover note clearly explaining why you would be a good fit for this position. We look forward to hearing from you!

Abode is focused on broadening opportunities for individuals from demographic groups that are historically underrepresented in the energy sector. We are committed to building an inclusive workplace culture where talented people of widely diverse backgrounds thrive. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to their race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, national origin, veteran status or disability.
