The McGarity Consulting Group is seeking an experienced Academic Instructional Designer to support higher education course development work. The designer will collaborate directly with faculty subject matter experts to storyboard course content, develop eLearning modules in Articulate Rise, and write video scripts for courses covering applied AI topics across industry settings. This is a part-time, remote, contractor engagement at 20 hours per week, running through August 31, 2026, with an immediate start.


Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with faculty SMEs to gather, organize, and translate course content into structured designs
  • Develop detailed module-level storyboards including on-screen content, script direction, visuals and media notes, learner interactions, knowledge checks, and assessment items mapped to learning objectives
  • Build and publish interactive course content in Articulate Rise 360
  • Write clear, engaging video scripts for instructional and facilitator-led video content
  • Design content to WCAG 2.1 Level AA and Universal Design for Learning principles from the first draft
  • Structure AI-related content responsibly, addressing privacy, bias, transparency, and human oversight as woven throughout the material
  • Revise deliverables based on faculty, client, and internal QA feedback across structured review rounds
  • Meet milestone dates and communicate progress proactively to the project lead

Required Qualifications

  • Higher education instructional design experience (required)
  • Demonstrated experience storyboarding eLearning courses at the module level
  • Proficiency developing courses in Articulate Rise 360
  • Video scripting experience for instructional content
  • Experience working directly with faculty as subject matter experts
  • Comfort designing content on AI or emerging technology topics, or a demonstrated ability to quickly structure unfamiliar technical subject matter from SME input
  • Working familiarity with accessible design practice (WCAG 2.1 AA, UDL)
  • Active Articulate 360 license (contractor must provide own license)
  • Availability during standard daytime business hours
  • Available to start immediately

Nice to Have

  • Accessibility certifications (such as DHS Trusted Tester, CPACC, or IAAP credentials)
  • Instructional design or eLearning certifications (such as Quality Matters or ATD)
  • Experience with SCORM packaging and LMS publishing (Blackboard Ultra a plus)
  • Experience designing courses for working professionals or continuing education audiences

Engagement Details

  • Classification: 1099 independent contractor
  • Hours: 20 hours per week
  • Schedule: Daytime availability required for SME interviews, faculty sessions, and team meetings
  • Rate: $60/hour
