Role  

The Senior Manager: Progression and Standards (Secondary) provides operational leadership for progression decisionmaking and standards across Wolsey Hall’s secondary provision, with accountability for progression decisions, the quality of tutordelivered services, including tutor recruitment, course maintenance, and examinations for enrolled students. 


The role focuses on the consistent application of qualification requirements, eligibility thresholds, and examination processes, ensuring that progression decisions and academic pathways are evidencebased, robust, and defensibleIt acts as the senior escalation point for matters relating to progression eligibility, examination readiness, course quality, and issues relating to the quality or consistency of tutordelivered services. The role does not include responsibility for curriculum design, teaching methodology, or pedagogical leadership. 


This is a senior operational leadership role focused on Secondary provision, reporting directly to the Director of Schools, and is critical to ensuring consistent, evidencebased academic progression decisionmaking and the integrity of standards and examinations processes. 

 

 Key Responsibilities 

Secondary Standards and Progression (Enrolled Students) 

  • Hold responsibility for reviewing and determining appropriate learning pathways for currently enrolled secondary students. 
  • Review individual student learning journeys, drawing on prior and current attainment and tutor feedback. 
  • Exercise senior professional judgement in determining readiness for examinationbased and post16 pathways. 
  • Make consistent, evidencebased decisions to approve progression and redirect students to alternative pathways where appropriate. 
  • Operate within progression principles and thresholds set by the Director of Schools, escalating exceptional or contested cases where policy interpretation, reputational risk, or regulatory considerations apply. 
  • Work closely with Student Support teams to ensure that progression decisions are communicated clearly, professionally, and with appropriate studentcentred support. 
  • Work closely with the Schools Relationship Manager for Wolsey Hall for Schools to ensure alignment between academic standards, programme delivery, and partner relationships. 

 

Examinations Leadership 

  • Provide senior operational leadership for examinations across secondary provision. 
  • Lead and coordinate the work of examinations contractors, holding responsibility for the overall examinations function. 
  • Ensure robust systems and processes for examination entries, access arrangements, awardingbody compliance, audits, and data protection. 
  • Act as a senior point of contact with examination boards and relevant regulators. 
  • Oversee examination delivery within an online learning context, including engagement with remote invigilation models where applicable. 
  • Identify operational and compliance risks and lead continuous improvement in examinations processes, particularly during assessment and results cycles. 

 

Tutor Services Oversight 

  • Lead and coordinate Tutor Services Managers delivering Secondary tutor services. 
  • Hold responsibility for oversight of the secondary tutor contractor pool, including service quality expectations, assurance processes, and escalation frameworks. 
  • Act as the senior escalation point for complex tutor-related concerns, working with Secondary Tutor Services Managers. 
  • Lead and contribute to tutor recruitment, onboarding processes, and ongoing quality expectations across secondary provision. 

 

Course Oversight and Quality Interface 

  • Act as the senior point of contact for secondary Supervisors of Courses. 
  • Ensure ongoing alignment between course provision, qualification requirements, and progression expectations. 
  • Establish and lead proactive and systematic approaches to course maintenance and quality review. 

 

Collaboration and Organisational Influence 

  • Work closely with Directors of Schools, Student Support colleagues including both Wolsey Hall Oxford and Wolsey Hall for Schools, Tutor Services teams, and Product and Technology functions. 
  • Act as a visible and trusted senior figure for students, families, and staff in academic matters. 
  • Provide regular insight into progression patterns, examination risks, and standardsrelated issues. 
  • Contribute to external scrutiny relating to secondary standards, assessment, progression, and examinations. 
  • Present regular online webinars and informational sessions for prospective and current homeschooled students and their parents, providing them with tools and strategies to enhance the homeschooling experience. 


Person Specification 

Essential 

  • Significant professional experience in secondary education with responsibility for assessment, examinations, or equivalent academic decisionmaking. 
  • Proven ability to exercise senior professional judgement regarding student readiness, progression, and outcomes. 
  • Experience working with examinations processes, assessment cycles, or awardingbody requirements. 
  • Experience leading or overseeing managers or senior operational staff. 
  • Strong understanding of GCSE and A Level qualification requirements. 
  • Ability to operate effectively within aonline education environment. 
  • Strong communication skills and the credibility to make, communicate, and defend decisions with colleagues and families. 

Desirable 

  • Experience working as, or closely alongside, an Examinations Officer in a school or college setting. 
  • Experience of inspection, audit, or external scrutiny relating to examinations or assessment. 
  • Familiarity with remote or online exam delivery and/or remote invigilation models.
