Job Description

Reporting into the Chief Strategy, Platforms & Transformation Officer, this role leads the US Strategy & Execution function for the US business and is accountable for shaping the US strategic agenda and narrative, translating and governing US enterprise priorities into an actionable project portfolio, and ensuring that strategic projects, transformation initiatives, functional strategy, and US responsible AI decisions are governed through a coherent, US enterprise-wide model.

The VP, Head, US Strategy and Execution is responsible for shaping, prioritizing and governing the US Commercial strategy and ensuring it translates into a clear, executable portfolio of US enterprise initiatives. This role serves as the US enterprise “control tower” for business strategy, owning the integration of strategic planning, portfolio prioritization, functional strategy, and governance, while enabling the US Leadership Team (USLT) to make informed, high-impact decisions and drive sustained outcomes. This is a foundational leadership role, responsible for building new US enterprise capabilities in strategy portfolio prioritization and integrated US LT governance, which do not exist today.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategy Development & Alignment

  • Lead US Commercial strategy in alignment with enterprise priorities and USLT direction

  • Define strategic options and trade-offs based on market dynamics and business needs

  • Ensure alignment across functional strategies

Strategy Execution

  • Translate strategy into clear, executable portfolios, roadmaps, and KPIs

  • Align strategic priorities across transformation, AI, and platform initiatives

  • Ensure enterprise-wide clarity, sequencing, and delivery focus

Enterprise Portfolio Prioritization

  • Build and lead integrated portfolio prioritization and planning capability

  • Own intake, evaluation, and sequencing of enterprise initiatives

  • Guide trade-offs across value, capacity, risk, and dependencies

Strategic Governance

  • Design and operate an integrated US strategic governance model

  • Lead cross-functional decision forums and portfolio oversight

  • Establish clear decision rights, accountability, and escalation pathways

Delivery Support

  • Support execution of key strategic initiatives (outside transformation programs)

  • Drive problem framing, opportunity sizing, and data-driven decision-making

  • Ensure initiatives are measurable, aligned, and value-accretive

Insights & Performance Tracking

  • Provide strategic insights and scenario analysis to USLT

  • Track performance against enterprise KPIs and portfolio outcomes

  • Enable continuous, fact-based strategy refinement

Leadership & Impact

  • Build and lead a high-performing strategy and execution organization

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to USLT on priorities and trade-offs

  • Drive integration across strategy, transformation, AI, and platform investments

  • Partner across global strategy, transformation programs, and capability teams to ensure alignment and execution

Essential Requirements:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a related field Preferred: Advanced degree (Master of Science and/or MBA)

  • 12+ years in US enterprise strategy, business planning, governance, strategic project leadership and/or transformation leadership in pharma, healthcare, or similarly regulated industries.

  • Strong understanding of US healthcare / biopharma business dynamics, enterprise operating models, governance processes, and executive stakeholder management

  • Proven ability to define governance processes, implement operating models, lead cross-functional forums, manage enterprise risk, and drive adherence to enterprise standards and controls.

  • Strong communication and skills, with demonstrated ability to lead in a dynamic, multifunctional environment and enable impactful and fast decision-making while navigating enterprise complexity and longer-term implications.

  • Create focus and clarity to translate strategy into action and governance into disciplined execution.

  • Engage across boundaries, integrate diverse perspectives, challenge assumptions, and drive collective impact for the enterprise.

  • Build and lead high-performing teams with accountability, collaboration, courage, and candor.

Novartis Compensation Summary:

The salary for this position is expected to range between $288,400.00 and $535,600.00 USD Annual per year. The final salary offered is determined based on factors like, but not limited to, relevant skills and experience, and upon joining Novartis will be reviewed periodically. Novartis may change the published salary range based on company and market factors. Your compensation will include a performance-based cash incentive and, depending on the level of the role, eligibility to be considered for annual equity awards. US-based eligible employees will receive a comprehensive benefits package that includes health, life and disability benefits, a 401(k) with company contribution and match, and a variety of other benefits. In addition, employees are eligible for a generous time off package including vacation, personal days, holidays and other leaves.
