About CLEAR Global

CLEAR Global is a non-profit organisation that exists to help people get vital information and be heard, whatever language they speak. We work mostly on behalf of nonprofit partners providing language services, language research, and developing language technology for a linguistically inclusive world. To do this we have a global community of over 200,000 linguists who offer their time, energy and skills to address language inequality. This community translates millions of words of life-saving and life-changing information a year, supports vulnerable people with interpretation services, and engages in digital language development and advocacy. 

Background to the role

Voice technology has huge potential to help people access information and services in their own language, especially those with limited literacy or digital access. But most voice-enabled tools only work well in a small number of widely-spoken languages. To help change this, CLEAR Global built TWB Voice, a platform where people can record their voice and check the voice recordings of others, helping to build voice datasets in languages that are currently underserved by this kind of technology.

This work is community-led: volunteers help guide and support other community members through the process of contributing their voice and checking recordings, so that the resulting dataset is high-quality and representative of the language community.

The role

The Volunteer Voice Contribution Officer will support and guide community members as they take part in voice recording and recording-checking activities on the TWB Voice platform. This includes helping people register and log in, answering their questions, helping them if they get stuck, and giving clear, encouraging feedback if their recordings don't yet meet the quality needed. The role also involves encouraging community members to contribute and check (validate) recordings made by others.

This is a flexible role (5–20 hours per week) suited to someone who enjoys helping and guiding people, solving small problems, and keeping a community motivated and engaged.

Responsibilities

• Help people get started: Guide community members through registering and logging in to the TWB Voice platform, making sure they can access it easily.
• Support onboarding: Help welcome and orient new contributors, making sure they understand how to take part and what good-quality recordings look like.
• Answer questions: Be a friendly, reliable point of contact for community members who have questions about how the platform works or what's expected of them.
• Mentor and support: Help community members who get stuck or confused, walking them through steps and encouraging them to keep going.
• Give feedback on recordings: Where a recording does not meet the quality needed, explain clearly and kindly what went wrong and how to improve, so contributors can try again with confidence.
• Encourage recording checks: Motivate community members to listen to and check (validate) other people's voice recordings, making sure they know what this means and helping keep this process moving steadily.
• Monitor participation: Keep an eye on how many people are recording and checking recordings, and flag any drop in activity or engagement.
• Spot and flag issues: Notice any recurring problems (for example, technical issues, unclear instructions, or repeated quality issues) and raise these with the Senior Community Officer. Note down common questions, issues, and feedback themes to help improve guidance and support over time.
• Recognise contributors: Help highlight and thank active community members for their voice contributions and their work checking recordings.
• Other tasks: Take on other related community support tasks as needed.
• Hold TWB Voice Clinics as needed: Facilitate TWB Voice clinic where contributors meet each other, share best recording tips, share experiences and learn from each other. The clinics may be planned in collaboration with CLEAR Global Community Officer.
• Represent CLEAR Global well: Act in the best interests of the organization throughout the project.

(This role focuses on voice recording and recording-checking activities. It does not include transcription or translation tasks.)

What we are looking for in candidates

Skills, experience or qualifications

• Good command of English and a native speaker of the language of data collection;
• Some previous experience helping, mentoring, or supporting others (this can include volunteering, tutoring, or community work) is helpful, but not essential;
• Patient, friendly, and clear communicator, comfortable giving constructive feedback;
• Comfortable learning new tools and software; training and support will be provided.

Requirements

This position is varied and hands-on. The right person is an energetic team player who agrees with CLEAR Global's basic beliefs and values, and who can work remotely while staying in regular contact with the Senior Community Officer and the wider team.
