Job Description

The Test Lead is responsible for interpreting testing needs, designing and executing appropriate tests, and ensuring that solutions meet quality standards and business requirements. The role focuses on mitigating risk, validating outcomes, and continuously improving testing practices to enhance reliability and stakeholder confidence.

A lot of the job of testing doesn't come in the testing phase, it comes up stream either in development or specification, so requires coaching BAs and developers to change how they work.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Designing and Executing Tests

  • Set up suitable test environments with guidance.
  • Select appropriate test types and techniques with support.
  • Design, build, maintain, and execute tests aligned to user needs and requirements.
  • Conduct exploratory testing to uncover hidden issues.
  • Research and trial new test types and techniques.

Managing, Reporting, and Resolving Defects

  • Collaborate to establish a defect management process for reporting and resolution.
  • Assess dependencies, defects, and risks critically, with support.
  • Contribute to mitigation and contingency planning.
  • Manage stakeholder expectations and communications during defect resolution.
  • Clearly communicate risks and defect impacts to stakeholders.

Test Analysis

  • Work with stakeholders to identify functional and non-functional quality characteristics that add value.
  • Determine test scope following agreed approaches.
  • Advocate for test needs (e.g., data, access, environments)
  • Ensure test needs (data, access, environments) are implemented early in delivery.
  • Apply multiple techniques to analyse complex information and identify risks.

Test and Quality Planning

  • Create or adapt testing approaches based on risk.
  • Follow and contribute to the development of a quality testing strategy.
  • Support continuous improvement of testing approaches, plans, and strategies.

Test Engineering

  • Explain the importance of testing processes, environments, and tools in delivering quality outcomes.
  • Apply test engineering practices and standards, with guidance where required.
  • Support the maintenance and improvement of automated tests and tools required for testing.

Non-functional items like performance and scalability will require technical knowledge to define effectively.

For NF items, we would like a Test Lead to have knowledge of these key areas and how to support the delivery.
