Lead tax planning and advisory strategies for Australian businesses, trusts, and related entities while managing complex tax compliance. Review financial statements and provide strategic guidance on Division 7A and trust distributions to ensure tax efficiency.

Job Description:

We are seeking an experienced Australian Tax Accountant with strong expertise in business taxation, tax planning, and advisory within the Australian tax system.

This is not a purely compliance or tax preparation role. The successful candidate will be expected to own the strategy layer for business clients—identifying tax planning opportunities, advising on appropriate structures, managing trust distribution strategies, and providing guidance on Division 7A matters.

The ideal candidate combines strong technical Australian tax knowledge with commercial judgment and is comfortable independently reviewing a client's circumstances, identifying risks and opportunities, and recommending practical tax strategies.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead tax planning and advisory for Australian businesses, business owners, trusts, and related entities.

  • Develop proactive business tax strategies based on clients' structures, financial positions, and commercial objectives.

  • Advise on trust distributions, including distribution planning and associated tax implications.

  • Provide strategic guidance on Division 7A, including shareholder/director loans, repayments, dividends, and appropriate structuring.

  • Review business and group structures and identify opportunities to improve tax efficiency while maintaining compliance with Australian tax legislation.

  • Advise clients on company, trust, and individual tax considerations as they relate to privately held businesses and business groups.

  • Review financial statements, tax returns, and supporting work prepared by accounting teams, identifying technical issues and planning opportunities.

  • Manage year-end and pre-year-end tax planning and communicate clear recommendations and action items to clients.

  • Work confidently within Xero to review financial data, identify issues, and support tax planning and advisory work.

  • Research and interpret Australian taxation legislation and ATO guidance to support technically sound recommendations.

  • Collaborate with clients and internal accounting teams to ensure tax strategies are implemented correctly and on time.

  • Maintain strong client relationships and explain complex tax matters in practical, commercially relevant terms.

Qualifications:

  • Relevant degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or a related discipline.

  • Strong professional experience in Australian business taxation, ideally within public practice, business advisory, or an accounting firm serving Australian SMEs and privately held businesses.

  • Demonstrated experience providing tax planning and strategic tax advice, rather than solely preparing tax returns and compliance work.

  • Strong working knowledge of Australian business tax, including companies, trusts, business owners, and related entity structures.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of trust distribution planning and Division 7A requirements and strategies.

  • Strong proficiency with Xero is required.

  • Ability to review a client's financial and tax position and independently identify tax risks, opportunities, and recommended strategies.

  • Strong understanding of Australian tax compliance requirements and ATO guidance.

  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and numerical skills.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical tax concepts clearly to clients.

  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment and take ownership of client deliverables and deadlines.

  • CA/CPA qualification or equivalent professional accounting qualification is highly desirable.

Benefits:

  • Opportunity for 100% remote work.

  • Competitive AUD compensation package.

  • Access to advanced legal research and practice management tools.

  • Continuing education and professional development support focused on Australian personal injury law.
