Job Summary and Description:

Duties:                        

  • Using power systems engineering and energy systems modeling, focus on power system expansion planning and operations research.

  • Develop and implement optimization-based planning models (e.g., coordinated generation and transmission expansion, unit commitment), apply mixed-integer, stochastic, and large-scale mathematical programming techniques, and analyze the impacts of emerging technologies and policies on system reliability, costs, and operations. 

  • The role involves independent technical research, model formulation, computational implementation, and interpretation of results to support planning studies, customer-facing analyses, proposals, technical publications, and presentations at external conferences.

  • May telecommute from anywhere in the US.

Requirements:

  • Employer will accept a Master’s degree in Energy, Energy Systems Engineering, Power Systems, Operations Research, or related field, and 2 years of experience in the job offered or an energy engineering-related occupation.

  • Alternatively, Employer will accept a Ph.D. in Energy, Energy Systems Engineering, Power Systems, Operations Research, or related field.

Experience or Education Must Include:

  • Optimization- and simulation-based modeling for expansion planning and generation scheduling studies

  • Applying scalable, applied power system modeling frameworks to real-world planning and operational analyses

  • Energy economics, electricity markets, and mathematical optimization modeling

  • Power system analysis and modeling

  • Power system planning models and simulations, using scripting environments such as MATLAB, Python, Julia, or GAMS

  • Power system operations modeling, including production cost simulation using the same scripting tools

  • Data analytics and visualization skills, with the ability to extract insights, build clean graphical outputs or lightweight GUIs, and communicate results effectively

  • Design and use of scalable, applied power system modeling and optimization frameworks, implemented through custom-developed tools capable of supporting real-world planning and operational analyses at industry scale

  • Analytical mindset, capable of identifying patterns, diagnosing model behavior, and translating technical findings into clear conclusions

  • Experience/education in the utilities/energy industry

The salary range for this position is $115,253 USD to $134,550 USD annually.

This salary range is an estimate, and the actual salary may vary based on various factors, including without limitation applicant's education, experience, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. The salary may also be adjusted based on applicant's geographic location.

This role is eligible to participate in EPRI’s annual incentive program. The amount of incentive varies and is subject to the terms and conditions of the plan.

This role is eligible to participate in EPRI’s standard employee benefit programs, which currently include the following: medical, dental, vision, 401k, STD/LTD and paid family leave, life and accident insurance, paid time off (flexible vacation, sick leave, and holiday pay).
