Job Summary
The Sr SAP ABAP Developer will provide hands-on technical leadership, architecture, design, and solution delivery for SAP application development, workflow automation, integrations, enhancements, and production support. This offshore role requires deep ABAP expertise and proven experience leading delivery teams, defining scalable technical solutions, and integrating SAP with SAP and non-SAP platforms. The position will partner closely with business, functional, architecture, integration, Basis, Security, QA, and U.S.-based teams to deliver secure, maintainable, high-performing solutions across logistics and Order-to-Cash processes.
Primary Duties
- Lead the offshore SAP development team across solution design, project delivery, enhancements, interfaces, workflow, upgrades, releases, defect resolution, and production support.
- Own technical discovery, feasibility analysis, solution architecture, design decisions, effort estimates, delivery plans, technical specifications, and implementation approaches for complex SAP requirements.
- Design and develop scalable Object-Oriented ABAP solutions using classes, interfaces, inheritance, polymorphism, exception classes, design patterns, dependency separation, reusable frameworks, and ABAP Unit.
- Lead SAP Business Workflow design and development, including workflow templates, tasks, events, agents, containers, business objects/classes, deadlines, escalations, substitutions, work-item administration, email notifications, debugging, monitoring, and restart/recovery procedures.
- Architect and deliver SAP-to-SAP and SAP-to-non-SAP integrations using ALE/IDoc, RFC, BAPI, OData, REST, SOAP, web services, APIs, file-based interfaces, middleware, and event-driven patterns as applicable.
- Own inbound and outbound ALE/IDoc solutions, including message types, basic types, extensions, custom segments, partner profiles, ports, process codes, distribution models, change pointers, serialization, status management, monitoring, error handling, and reprocessing.
- Design and support dialog and Module Pool applications, including screen flow logic, PBO/PAI processing, table controls, tab strips, custom controls, validations, locking, authorizations, transaction design, and maintainable separation of presentation and business logic.
- Lead RF development for warehouse execution, including RF screens, logical transactions, menus, function codes, barcode/scanning flows, device considerations, validations, exception handling, performance, and operational troubleshooting.
- Partner with functional teams to design solutions across SAP Logistics Execution and Order-to-Cash, including sales orders, deliveries, picking, packing, warehouse operations, post goods issue, transportation, billing, outputs, and related integration touchpoints.
- Conduct architecture, design, and code reviews; enforce standards for performance, security, maintainability, error handling, naming, documentation, testability, and transport discipline.
- Use ABAP Test Cockpit, Code Inspector, ABAP Unit, SQL analysis, runtime analysis, traces, and security checks to improve code quality and prevent critical issues from progressing across the landscape.
- Promote SAP-standard, upgrade-stable solutions and clean-core principles through released APIs, approved enhancement technologies, side-by-side extensions, and disciplined management of custom code and technical debt.
- Lead root-cause analysis for complex cross-system incidents and determine whether corrective action belongs to custom code, configuration, master data, workflow, middleware, authorization, network, or infrastructure.
- Plan and assign work, manage priorities and dependencies, review deliverables, coach developers, build technical capability, and maintain delivery accountability across onsite and offshore teams.
- Coordinate testing, transports, release readiness, cutover, go-live, hypercare, incident response, and production stabilization; communicate status, risks, options, and recovery plans to technical and business stakeholders.
- Drive continuous improvement through reusable assets, automation, observability, performance optimization, technical-debt reduction, development standards, and knowledge-sharing practices.
Qualifications
- Experience with SAP S/4HANA development and transformation programs, including modern ABAP syntax, ADT, CDS views, AMDP, RAP, OData, custom-code remediation, and simplification-item impact analysis.
- Experience applying clean-core principles, released APIs, approved extension methods, ATC governance, security checks, and upgrade-stable extensibility patterns.
- Experience with SAP BTP, Integration Suite or comparable middleware, event-driven integration, API management, side-by-side extensions, or SAP Build Process Automation.
- Experience with EWM, LE-TRA, SAP Transportation Management, output management, Fiori/UI5, Web Dynpro ABAP, or warehouse and transportation-system integrations.
- Automotive, automotive aftermarket, discrete manufacturing, distribution, or a similar high-volume logistics industry background is an advantage. Familiarity with EDI-driven customer and supplier processes, scheduling agreements, advance shipping notices, labeling, warehouse execution, and high-volume order fulfillment is beneficial.
- SAP certification in ABAP, S/4HANA, integration, workflow, BTP, or logistics is preferred but not required.
Education / Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, MIS, or a related field, or equivalent relevant professional experience.
- 12-15 years of hands-on SAP ABAP development experience, with substantial experience as a Technical Lead, Development Lead, or Solution Lead in complex enterprise environments.
- Proven leadership experience managing or coordinating SAP development teams, mentoring developers, reviewing technical deliverables, managing estimates and priorities, and collaborating across global time zones.
- Expert-level Object-Oriented ABAP experience, including solution architecture, reusable frameworks, exception handling, testable design, performance optimization, and complex debugging.
- Strong SAP Business Workflow experience with end-to-end workflow design, development, enhancement, agent determination, event linkage, deadline and escalation handling, monitoring, troubleshooting, and production support.
- Strong SAP and non-SAP integration experience using ALE/IDoc, RFC, BAPI, APIs, OData, REST, SOAP, web services, files, and enterprise middleware or integration platforms.
- Strong inbound and outbound ALE/IDoc development and support experience, including custom types/extensions, interface recovery, duplicate prevention, high-volume processing, monitoring, and production issue resolution.
- Strong hands-on experience with Module Pool programming and dialog applications, including screen design, PBO/PAI, table controls, custom controls, validations, authorizations, and transaction handling.
- Hands-on RF development experience supporting warehouse mobile transactions, scanning workflows, RF screens, logical transactions, menus, function codes, device behavior, and troubleshooting.
- Demonstrated design and solutioning experience, including requirements analysis, fit-gap assessment, technical architecture, integration design, non-functional requirements, estimates, risks, prototypes, design documentation, and stakeholder presentations.
- Experience with ABAP Dictionary, reports, ALV, enhancements, BAdIs, user exits, BTEs, BAPIs, RFCs, forms, application logs, background jobs, conversions, and performance tuning.
- Functional and technical understanding of SAP Logistics Execution, Shipping, Warehouse Management, Transportation, and end-to-end Order-to-Cash processes.
- Experience with software development lifecycle, Agile delivery, change control, transport management, incident and problem management, release governance, cutover, and production support.
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills, with the ability to explain architecture, technical trade-offs, risks, and recommendations to both technical and business audiences.
