Your impact on team

Software Engineer II contributes to the success of the team by building solid, reliable code and delivering meaningful contributions to team goals. This is a mid-level individual contributor role defined by increasing independence: the Software Engineer II takes on moderately complex features, participates thoughtfully in design discussions, and builds collaborative confidence. The role requires hands-on development, sound technical judgment, and a commitment to continuous improvement and quality.

This is a remote position open to applicants authorized to work for any employer within the United States.

What You’ll Do:

• Design, develop, and maintain modern web applications (front-end and back-end), writing reliable, maintainable code and refactoring to improve quality on your own initiative.
• Take ownership of medium-scope features and deliver them end to end with minimal guidance, breaking down work and managing complexity.
• Own medium-complexity features, unblock yourself, and begin helping to unblock teammates.
• Collaborate with cross-functional partners, including Product, User Experience, and Site Reliability Engineering, communicating assumptions clearly and aligning on requirements.
• Participate in code reviews, giving thoughtful feedback that engages with design decisions, not just correctness.
• Bring a working hypothesis for how to use AI to get meaningfully better at engineering and put it to work on your own features, applying it critically and distinguishing where it genuinely helps from where it is hype.
• Contribute to design discussions and begin influencing technical decisions within the team.
• Understand product requirements and suggest improvements with end users in mind.
• Support newer teammates through pairing and knowledge sharing, while actively seeking feedback to improve your own skills.

Were looking for someone with:

• Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience preferred.
• 2+ years of applicable experience, or demonstrated readiness beyond Software Engineer I.

• Proficiency in front-end and/or back-end modern web development.
• Ability to work independently on medium-complexity features and break down work without step-by-step guidance.
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to communicate assumptions and collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, version control systems, and testing practices.
• Demonstrated ability to refactor and improve code quality independently.
• Hands-on experience using AI tools to improve your own engineering work, with the judgment to evaluate where they help and where they do not.
• Curiosity, adaptability, and a growth mindset.

Preferred:

• Experience with our tech stack: Go, Java, TypeScript, Angular, AWS, Kubernetes, and CI/CD tools like CircleCI.
• Background in education technology or mission-driven industries.
• Familiarity with accessible design principles and practices.

The pay range for this position is between $90,000 - $135,000 annually. However, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and location.  Additionally, a full range of medical and/or other benefits may be provided, depending on the position offered.
