Job Title: Software Developer Intern

Location: Virtual

Duration: Winter 2027 - 8 Months (January 2027 - August 2027)

Availability: *Full-time availability of 37.5 - 40 hours weekly is required to be eligible for this opportunity.

About the opportunity:

As a Software Developer Intern at Dayforce, you will join one of our software engineering teams and contribute to the development of enterprise-scale cloud software used by customers around the world.

Working alongside experienced Software Developers, Test Engineers, Product Managers, UX Designers, and other partners, you will gain hands-on experience across the software development lifecycle, including design, development, testing, code review, troubleshooting, and delivery. Depending on your team placement, you may contribute to areas such as frontend and backend development, APIs and services, test automation, cloud and data platforms, developer tooling, or AI-enabled solutions.

You will receive mentorship and support from experienced team members while being encouraged to ask questions, contribute ideas, learn new technologies, and progressively take ownership of your work. This is an opportunity to strengthen your technical skills while solving real product and customer problems in a collaborative, agile environment.

What you’ll get to do:

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain software features and solutions with support from experienced engineers.
  • Write clean, readable, maintainable, and well-tested code using modern software development practices.
  • Work cross-functionally with Software Developers, Test Engineers, Product Managers, UX Designers, and other partners to deliver high-quality product experiences.
  • Contribute to new product capabilities as well as enhancements and maintenance of existing functionality.
  • Participate throughout the software development lifecycle, including design, implementation, testing, code reviews, troubleshooting, and delivery.
  • Investigate software defects and technical issues, contribute to root-cause analysis, and help drive issues to resolution.
  • Develop and maintain automated tests, including unit, integration, and other forms of test automation.
  • Work with technologies such as APIs, databases, cloud services, web applications, and development tools based on your team assignment.
  • Participate in code reviews, technical and design discussions, Agile ceremonies, and team demos, while learning how engineering teams evaluate technical choices and tradeoffs.
  • Gain exposure to engineering considerations such as scalability, reliability, performance, and maintainability within enterprise-scale software systems.
  • Contribute to code quality, engineering practices, tooling, automation, and development process improvements.
  • Help ensure software can be reliably built, tested, and delivered through modern development and deployment pipelines.
  • Explore emerging technologies, including AI-powered development tools, and identify opportunities to improve engineering productivity and solve technical problems.
  • Continuously learn new technologies, tools, and approaches while taking increasing ownership of development tasks.

Skills and experience we value:

  • Currently pursuing a degree or diploma in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Programming experience gained through coursework, personal projects, internships, hackathons, open-source contributions, or other hands-on experience.
  • Familiarity with one or more programming languages such as C#, Java, Python, C++, or JavaScript/TypeScript.
  • Understanding of programming fundamentals, object-oriented programming, data structures, algorithms, and problem-solving concepts.
  • Basic understanding of relational databases and SQL.
  • Familiarity with software development fundamentals such as debugging, testing, and version control.
  • Interest in learning modern software development technologies and practices, including web applications, APIs, cloud technologies, data platforms, automation, or AI.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with curiosity and a willingness to learn.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within an agile development team.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • A strong sense of ownership and enthusiasm for building high-quality software.

What would really make you stand out:

Experience with any of the following is an asset, but is not required:

  • C#/.NET, Python, Java, JavaScript, or TypeScript.
  • Modern frontend technologies and frameworks such as React, HTML, and CSS.
  • REST APIs, JSON, backend services, or microservices.
  • Relational or NoSQL databases and data processing technologies.
  • Cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud.
  • Automated testing, unit-testing frameworks, or test automation tools.
  • Git and collaborative source control practices.
  • CI/CD concepts and DevOps tools and practices.
  • Docker, Kubernetes, containers, distributed systems, microservices, or messaging concepts.
  • Data and analytics technologies such as Databricks, Apache Spark, or data lake platforms.
  • AI-powered development tools, AI applications, LLM APIs, agents, intelligent automation, or related emerging technologies.
  • Applying software design patterns and writing maintainable, testable code.
  • SaaS or enterprise software development through previous internships, academic projects, personal projects, hackathons, or open-source contributions.
