Reports to: Senior Program Officer

 

Overview

The CDC Foundation is seeking a Senior Technical Advisor for Breastfeeding Public Health Programs to work with the Maternal, Infant, and Toddler Nutrition Team and Breastfeeding Work Group in implementing the Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity’s (DNPAO) strategic activities to improve breastfeeding support in hospitals, worksites and communities, and reduce disparities in breastfeeding and improve the public’s health. The Senior Technical Advisor will provide expert-level support and guidance, acting as a key resource to DNPAO. Strong communication and teamwork skills are of absolute importance to succeed in this role.


This is a remote position. The Senior Technical Advisor must live and work in the United States for the duration of the position.


Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Provide knowledge and content expertise to help advance the breastfeeding strategic priority.
  • Contribute to developing and updating breastfeeding content for CDC’s website, using knowledge of lactation science and evidence reviews.
  • Coordinate the analysis of data, including indicators on environmental and policy breastfeeding supports, for release on DNPAO’s Data, Trends and Maps website.
  • Perform systematic reviews of scientific literature on topics related to breastfeeding and health outcomes.
  • Update and create surveillance reports and communications documents as needed, based on implementation of the Breastfeeding Work Group’s annual work plan.
  • Respond to public inquiries, or other partner organization inquiries, about breastfeeding topics.
  • Support implementation of CDC’s Maternity Practices in Infant Nutrition and Care (mPINC) survey including responding to inquiries about the survey or the data, developing survey instruments, and reporting and releasing findings.
  • Prepare, review and develop briefing documents, publications and presentations for key stakeholders, including policymakers, hospital administrators and employers.
  • Routinely communicate information with CDC management and staff and provide input to document program activities and efforts.

 

 Qualifications and Necessary Skills

 

  • Masters in human nutrition, public health, epidemiology, behavioral science, or related public health discipline required. Doctoral degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in breastfeeding/human lactation (e.g. International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, Certified Lactation Counselor, research focus).
  • At least 5 years of experience working at a federal level to support breastfeeding activities.
  • Experience working at a federal level to support efforts related to surveillance of, or implementation of, maternity care practices supportive of breastfeeding and infant feeding. 
  • Previous experience providing high-quality responses to public inquiries related to breastfeeding and infant feeding. 
  • Previous experience managing or overseeing federal data releases and associated communication efforts related to infant feeding. 
  • Experience in behavioral, environmental and policy aspects of breastfeeding support.
  • Proficiency with common word processing, spreadsheet and graphics software (especially MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Superior organizational skills, attention to detail and the ability to work independently.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to listen well, and effectively represent the organization and its mission.
