AI Summary

Review and sign US federal and state tax returns for small businesses and individuals while providing tax planning and advisory services. Collaborate with leadership to develop internal processes and train team members as the new tax practice grows.

This is a remote position.

Want to be one of the first signers at a new tax practice being launched by an established accounting firm?

For the last 10 years, BooksTime has offered outsourced bookkeeping, controller and CFO services – but no tax. That’s changing. Starting soon, we’ll be launching a new kind of tax practice.

About BooksTime:

  • Focused on building personal relationships and trust with each client.

  • Modern, tech-savvy approach.

  • A culture that is friendly, collaborative, supportive, and positive.

  • Clients include small businesses, nonprofits and individuals across the US.

  • Consistent growth every year since being founded in 2016. Recognized on the Inc. 5000 list of America's fastest-growing private companies.

  • Approx. 120 staff across the US and abroad.

  • Not a CPA firm; no assurance services.

About the tax practice we’ll be launching:

  • Humane hours -- all year round. At most firms, tax season is a nightmare: never-ending hours, intense pressure, high stress. We're going to put an end to all that. Hours can be capped at a limit you choose -- e.g. 30, 35, 40, or 45 hours per week (depending on your preference). Your workload will match your hours. We believe you should have a fulfilling career in tax – without sacrificing your personal life or your sanity.

  • Flexible schedule. Work part-time or full-time. Set your own schedule. (Aside from some times that need to be available for meetings, most of your hours will be flexible.)

  • Fully remote. No need to commute. Work from anywhere.

  • Growth-oriented. As our tax practice grows, you'll have an opportunity to grow with it, and potentially take on new roles, including leadership roles, if desired.

What you'll do:

  • Tax returns:

    • You’ll review the returns our team prepares, sign them under your own PTIN, and own the judgment calls.

    • You may also prepare some returns yourself, especially in the early days.

    • Your work will include US federal and state returns for small businesses and individuals, especially schedule C and S corp clients.

    • We’ll use Drake for the 2026 tax year (though that may change in future years).

  • Tax explanation and advice:

    • Explain returns and positions to clients in plain language.

    • Provide planning and advisory where clients need it.

  • Other optional functions that can be added to this role, if desired:

    • Partner with other leaders to develop processes (such as client intake, quality review, etc.), define policies, and share your input as we build out the new tax practice.

    • Help us screen and train an overseas team who will help with tax prep.

    • Join occasional calls with prospective clients as our tax expert (accompanying our salesperson). You are not the salesperson and won't carry a sales quota.

    • Other optional add-on roles are available, including management roles, or supervising monthly bookkeeping services for clients – inquire for details.

A few notes about working relationships:

  • You’ll report directly to the CEO.

  • You’ll be working alongside one other signer at first (more later).

  • We also plan to build out a team of preparers in the near future.

  • Clients we provide tax services to will also receive our bookkeeping services, so you’ll generally be working from a clean set of books. You’ll be able to coordinate with the bookkeeping teams directly as needed.

Requirements

Requirements:

Core requirements:

  • Active, unrestricted CPA or EA (we're open to either; a current state license is a plus, not a requirement). US CPA licenses only.

  • Minimum 5+ years in US tax, 10+ years strongly preferred.

  • Experience reviewing and signing returns for clients (strictly required).

  • Must be adaptable and eager to learn new technologies and systems.

  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills. You should find it easy to build trust and rapport with clients.

  • Must have the patience to explain complex tax concepts to clients with no accounting background.

  • Fully fluent in English.

Not required, but would be a plus:

  • Partner-level experience in a tax firm

  • Familiarity with Drake

  • Familiarity with QuickBooks Online

  • Comfort with AI tools

This role is NOT a fit for someone who needs a lot of predefined structure, with a clear playbook to follow – this is a new tax practice, and you’ll be part of figuring out how things work. Especially in the early days, we’ll still be building the initial team and processes. This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to get in early at a new practice, help drive innovation, be creative, and make a big impact.

Benefits

Compensation:

  • Base + bonus:

    • Starting base rate: approx. $50-$70 per hour, with room for growth. Rate depends on experience, skills, and work location.

    • Annual bonus based on performance.

  • PTO for employees working 20+ hours/week.

  • QSEHRA (monthly healthcare reimbursement)

  • SIMPLE IRA with 3% employer match (once eligible)

  • Company-provided computer and equipment

  • CPE and license-renewal support

  • Free Headspace subscription

  • Significant schedule flexibility. The main requirement is that you be available between 9am and 11am Eastern Time at least 3 days per week (to ensure sufficient overlap with your colleagues).

BooksTime is an equal-opportunity employer. Candidates of every background are encouraged to apply.
