Senior Software Engineer – Cloud Infrastructure
About Vertex
Vertex is a high-growth enterprise software company powering real-time, cloud-native 3D applications for the world’s most advanced manufacturers. Our platform enables Fortune 500 industrial and defense-adjacent organizations to deploy scalable, highly performant 3D-enabled workflows in secure AWS environments.
We operate at the intersection of cloud infrastructure, enterprise engineering systems, and mission-critical deployments. As Vertex scales and expands into complex enterprise programs, securely and reliably building, delivering, and operating our platform across hosted and customer-owned environments is essential to our success.
The Role
Vertex is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to play a key role in how our product is built, tested, packaged, and delivered, both in our hosted (SaaS) environments and into customer-owned cloud environments.
You will:
- Build and evolve the infrastructure as code, CI/CD pipelines and release processes that ship the Vertex platform
- Make customer deployments and upgrades predictable, repeatable, and safe across many independent AWS environments, including GovCloud
- Work hands-on in Vertex service code when needed to improve deployability, performance, security, observability, and reliability
- Partner directly with customers and internal engineering teams to solve complex infrastructure and application problems related to performance, reliability and deployment
This role is ideal for a strong software engineer who has chosen to specialize in infrastructure, automation, and operations, and who is comfortable explaining an architecture to a customer's cloud engineering team as well as building the architecture and pipeline that deploys and thoroughly tests the platform.
Reporting Structure
Reports to: VP of Cloud Operations & Security
What You Will Own
- Design and maintain infrastructure as code patterns and frameworks used to deploy and upgrade Vertex in customer-owned cloud accounts as well as the Vertex SaaS environment
- Own CI/CD pipelines for build, test, security scanning, artifact publishing, and release across a complex codebase (Java, Scala, Python, Node, C++)
- Improve build performance and reliability for complex builds, including Scala/JVM and C++ components
- Operate and scale containerized services on AWS (ECS Fargate, MSK, RDS/Aurora, Redis, Opensearch, S3) for high-throughput, high-availability workloads
- Contribute changes to Vertex service code to improve deployability, configuration, resilience, and observability
- Build automation and tooling in Python and/or Go
- Use AI-assisted tools for development, code review, infrastructure changes, and automated testing, while helping the engineering team adopt and utilize these tools effectively and responsibly
- Implement and maintain security controls in the delivery pipeline, including code coverage, source code, and dependency scanning
- Support customer deployments and upgrades: troubleshoot environment-specific issues, review customer network and security constraints, and turn lessons learned into product and infrastructure improvements
- Produce clear documentation of deployment architecture, upgrade procedures, and security posture for customers and internal teams
- Participate in incident response and drive root-cause resolution
What You Need to Succeed
- 5+ years of experience in software engineering, DevOps, SRE, or platform engineering roles
- Deep, hands-on AWS experience across compute, networking, IAM, and managed data services
- Strong infrastructure as code experience, with CDK and CloudFormation preferred. Terraform or other IaaC technologies will also be valuable
- Proven experience designing and owning CI/CD pipelines for production systems (GitHub Actions or similar)
- Strong development skills in Python and/or Go, and the ability to read and modify application code in other languages such as Scala, Node, Java or C++
- Experience operating high-scale, high-availability environments, including monitoring, alerting, and incident response
- Practical, day-to-day use of AI-assisted tools for coding, code review, test automation, incident investigation, etc.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, including comfort working directly with customer technical teams
- Experience working remotely as part of a distributed engineering team
What Will Set You Apart
- Experience delivering software that customers deploy in their own cloud accounts (private SaaS, AWS Marketplace, BYOC models)
- Background or interest in 3D visualization, CAD, or engineering software
- Experience designing and evaluating performance and load testing in high scale environments
- Experience with AWS GovCloud or other regulated or air-gapped environments
- Familiarity with compliance frameworks such as CMMC, FedRAMP, NIST 800-171/800-53, or FIPS 140-validated cryptography
- Exposure to multiple cloud providers (AWS, Azure, GCP, etc.)
- Familiarity with Scala/JVM build tooling (sbt, Gradle, Maven) and C++ build systems
- Working knowledge of observability platforms such as Datadog, CloudWatch, or similar tools
- Knowledge of software supply-chain security practices (SBOMs, signing, hardened base images)
Our Technology Stack
- AWS-native architecture (Fargate, S3, MSK, RDS/Postgres, Redis, OpenSearch)
- Infrastructure as Code (CDK / CloudFormation)
- Containerized services
- Observability via Datadog, VictoriaMetrics, and CloudWatch
- Backend services in Java, Scala, Python, Node, C++
- Frontend SDKs and applications built with TypeScript, React, NextJS, VueJS, and Stencil
Why This Role Matters
As Vertex grows into larger enterprise deployments, how we ship the product matters as much as what we ship. Many of our enterprise deployments run in customer-owned environments with unique networking, security, and compliance requirements.
This role ensures:
- Reliable, repeatable deployments and upgrades across customer-owned AWS accounts
- A secure, auditable delivery pipeline from commit to customer environment
- Fast, dependable builds and tests that keep engineering productive
- A platform that runs reliably at scale in demanding, regulated environments
This is a high-impact role with real ownership of how Vertex is built, delivered, and operated.
