About AI & ML Platform Team
Our team is building the foundations to democratise Machine Learning for Atlassian’s teams, customers and ecosystem. Our goal is to create tools that are user-friendly and reliable, ensuring that Atlassian teams can easily embrace and utilize them. These tools will facilitate the development, deployment, measurement, and operation of AI & ML experiences. They will seamlessly integrate with the Atlassian Data Platform, enabling teams to efficiently and rapidly incorporate AI & ML capabilities into their workflows. The focus is on providing a smooth and hassle-free experience for Atlassian users, allowing them to leverage the power of AI & ML without any complications.
You will join the AI Gateway team within the Rovo & AI organization. This team builds and operates the foundational gateway to all Large Language Models (LLMs) at Atlassian, enabling product teams to deliver intelligent features at scale
Responsibilities
Design and build highly available, scalable microservices for the AI Gateway using Java, Kotlin, or Python.
Lead complex projects from technical design to launch, ensuring operational excellence and high-quality monitoring.
Collaborate with applied scientists and product teams to integrate generative AI and agentic orchestration frameworks.
Mentor junior engineers and drive engineering excellence through rigorous code and design reviews.
Optimize system performance, reliability, and security for high-scale distributed environments.
Operationalise leading LLM APIs (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, AWS Bedrock) into the gateway, staying current with the rapidly evolving AI landscape to ensure Atlassian leverages best-in-class model capabilities.

Qualifications
You’ll be a great fit if you have:
7+ years of experience in backend engineering with proficiency in Java, Kotlin, Go, or Python.
Expertise in designing RESTful/GraphQL APIs and large-scale distributed systems on AWS and/or GCP
Experience with Kubernetes, Docker, and CI/CD pipelines.
Knowledge of RDBMS (PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (DynamoDB, Cassandra) technologies.
Passion for Generative AI, LLMs, and MLOps lifecycle.
Strong communication and leadership skills to influence technical direction across teams.
Good to Have
Hands-on experience integrating leading LLM APIs (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, AWS Bedrock) in a production environment — including prompt engineering, token management, streaming responses, rate-limit handling, and failover strategies across multiple providers.
