Overview
LMI is seeking a Senior Product Designer to support Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) digital modernization initiatives spanning workflow improvement, automation, dashboards, AI-enabled experiences, digital tool adoption, and continuous improvement. This discovery-first, outcomes-oriented role will lead human-centered product design from problem framing and user research through prototyping, validation, implementation support, and post-release learning.
The Senior Product Designer will work directly with Government users, operational stakeholders, product and program leaders, engineers, data teams, AI/ML specialists, training resources, and support teams to understand how work is actually performed. The role will investigate workflow friction, manual burden, information gaps, workarounds, adoption barriers, and unmet needs before proposing a solution, ensuring design decisions are grounded in evidence rather than assumptions.
Research is an integral part of the role. The designer will plan and conduct interviews, contextual inquiry, workflow observation, concept testing, usability testing, and other appropriate qualitative or mixed-method research. Findings will be synthesized with product analytics, adoption metrics, support trends, operational data, and stakeholder feedback to identify opportunities, prioritize improvements, and measure whether released capabilities are producing the intended user and mission outcomes.
The successful candidate must be comfortable moving between research, service and workflow design, interaction design, prototyping, measurement, and implementation collaboration. The ideal candidate can bring structure to ambiguous problems, facilitate difficult tradeoffs, create trustworthy and accessible AI-enabled experiences, and establish repeatable research, design, measurement, and continuous-improvement practices across the VA portfolio.

Responsibilities
- Lead discovery and product research to identify high-value opportunities for workflow improvement, automation, dashboards, AI-enabled capabilities, and digital tool adoption.
- Plan and conduct interviews, contextual inquiry, workflow observation, concept testing, usability testing, and post-release feedback around clear research questions and decision needs.
- Synthesize qualitative and quantitative evidence into user needs, pain points, opportunity areas, design principles, and prioritized recommendations.
- Map current-state and future-state workflows, user journeys, service interactions, information flows, handoffs, exceptions, and workarounds across complex operational environments.
- Translate validated user needs into product concepts, user flows, information architecture, wireframes, prototypes, design specifications, acceptance considerations, and backlog-ready requirements.
- Design AI-enabled experiences that support transparency, user control, confidence calibration, feedback, exception handling, and appropriate human oversight.
- Design usable dashboards and data-rich interfaces that help users understand status, trends, priorities, exceptions, and required actions without unnecessary cognitive burden.
- Define and use product measures such as adoption, task completion, feature utilization, satisfaction, support demand, workflow time, and other relevant outcome indicators.
- Triangulate research findings with product analytics, usage data, help desk trends, operational measures, training feedback, and stakeholder observations to guide prioritization.
- Lead iterative prototype validation and usability testing, documenting what was learned, what changed, unresolved risks, and the evidence supporting major design decisions.
- Apply Section 508, WCAG, inclusive-design, and accessibility principles throughout research, design, prototyping, testing, and handoff activities.
- Partner with product, engineering, data, AI/ML, architecture, security/privacy, QA, training, change/adoption, and support teams to ensure designs are feasible, testable, supportable, and aligned to enterprise constraints.
- Communicate research findings, design rationale, evidence, risks, tradeoffs, and recommendations clearly to Government stakeholders, delivery teams, and executive audiences.
- Mentor designers and researchers and maintain reusable research templates, design patterns, evidence libraries, and measurement practices that strengthen team maturity and reduce repeated discovery.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in human-centered design, human-computer interaction, UX/product design, service design, interaction design, psychology, information science, or a related field; equivalent professional experience may be considered.
- 7+ years of progressive experience in product design, UX, human-centered design, service design, user research, or related digital-product roles, including responsibility for complex enterprise or workflow-oriented products.
- Portfolio demonstrating an end-to-end user-centered design process, including research-informed decisions, workflow or service understanding, iterative prototyping, usability validation, and clear design documentation.
- Demonstrated experience independently planning and leading user research using interviews, contextual inquiry, observation, concept testing, usability testing, or mixed-method approaches, with strong synthesis skills.
- Experience designing complex workflow, dashboard, automation, data-heavy, or decision-support products in environments where users must interpret information and take action efficiently.
- Experience designing or evaluating AI-enabled products, intelligent automation, responsible AI patterns, or human-in-the-loop workflows with attention to trust, transparency, feedback, and oversight.
- Experience defining or using product metrics, adoption measures, usage analytics, user feedback, or support data to evaluate product performance and guide iteration.
- Ability to translate ambiguous mission or operational needs into research questions, design hypotheses, prototypes, testable requirements, and measurable outcomes.
- Strong facilitation and collaboration skills across product, engineering, data, AI/ML, training, support, security, and senior stakeholder communities.
- Proficiency with Figma/FigJam and working familiarity with complementary research, mapping, prototyping, collaboration, and work-management tools such as Miro, Axure, Jira, Confluence, GitLab, or Azure DevOps.
- U.S. citizenship is required. Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a public trust clearance.
Desired:
- 10+ years leading product design, service design, UX research, or human-centered transformation in complex enterprise, federal, healthcare, or other regulated environments.
- Prior VA, VHA, federal health, or other Government experience involving digital modernization, workflow redesign, automation, dashboards, adoption, training, or product improvement.
- Experience with AI-assisted decision support, intelligent automation, generative AI, conversational experiences, or agentic workflows and associated human-factors considerations.
- Experience reducing manual burden or fragmented workflows through research-led digital product or service redesign, including service blueprints, opportunity registers, research repositories, or improvement roadmaps.
- Advanced Section 508/WCAG, accessibility testing, or inclusive-design experience for users with diverse access needs and assistive technologies.
- Relevant certification or advanced training such as Nielsen Norman Group UX Certification, Human Factors International CUA/CXA, UXQB CPUX, IAAP CPACC/WAS, LUMA Institute, or comparable credentials; advanced degree preferred.
